Does anyone have a recording of this?
It's from 03/17/94 - Elliot Hall: Purdue University: West Lafayette, IN.
Taken from fivehorizons.com:
He also gives a speech about 'Dissident' - saying that date rape is terrible and explaining that a woman's word is sacred and the no means no and that's what a "holy no" is.

Thanks! CR
I noticed that was only your second post on the board. Usually the responses are a little more helpful. TSIS setlist archive does indicate that there are recordings of this show. I dont have one, but Ill try to see if I can help you find one.

I wasn't trying to come off rude, I just hate Ed preaching on stage. I hope the original poster finds what he's looking for, really. Just not something I'd care to find.

Different strokes, is all. Personally, I love Ed's speeches. Without them, I'd find PJ to be a much more boring band. The speeches inject a little excitement/contact into the equation. I mean, without his speeches, you and I would not have exchanged ideas. We'd just sit there nodding that the music is pretty good.

I like the speeches as well. They add some personality and say something, whether people like it or not. It creates debate, which is great. Granted, some rants beat a dead horse.

That is the very kind of the thing that appealed to me about PJ in the early days....here was a hard rock band who sang songs from the perspective of an abused woman (Betterman) and gave speeches to drunken teenagers about how awful date rape is....a far cry from the type of bullshit that was expected from a rock star just a few years prior to that. They tapped a humanity that had been missing from rock music for 20 years at that point.

Interesting, had not thought of it from that direction...very true though.

lots of times i agree with you about that, case in point the video of ed going on stage with ben harper during ben's show and just starts blathering about politics, and it is cringe worthy. But this speech is definetly different in that it is something that everyone needs to here it and everyone needs to respect it. And for some of kids in the audience that night, i'm sure ed was someone they respected and looked up to, and he was in the position to effect those people.

I'm not saying I disagree with Ed's POV on the subject, becuase I surely don't in the least. I just don't like the way he goes about how he feels during these rants; I get the feeling he's condescending the audience with an "I have this platform so you better listen to me" attitude. Fuck that. And again, while I agree that what he said in this particular instance was important, why in the hell do people who paid money to see a show have to hear that?
I'm really not being callous about this. I respect Ed's feeling on the subject and agree with him 100 percent. But he can say it in a song and send the same impact without preaching from a fucking pulpit that he justifies doing by the reasoning of people paid to be there so he has that right.

Mecca, I understand that post was supposed to be in fun, but...not cool at all. I don't find anything remotely funny about rape.

I understand this point, but would also like to point out that endless hours are spent on this board and others debating the meaning of songs. I read several pages one day on dissident alone of people trying to decide if he was saying "holy no" or "holy know" and just what that was supposed to mean. While I do appreciate the fact that eds lyrics are somewhat vague and allow people to interpret and apply as they choose, its interesting to hear him say "I was thinking this and thats what the song is about."

Fair enough. It's just my personal (dis)taste for him talking on stage. I don't mind his funny little anecdotes too much, but when things turn serious I tend to get perturbed. But ultimately, I'll still put up with 10 minutes of preaching to see a kick-ass 2+ hour show. I just don't have to like it.

Like he did during Storytellers, explaining "The Curse" and all that. That was nice. And I digged the 2000 Seattle II speech - "when will music get some respect in this fucking town"- and also mentioning the ridiculous amount of security at that show. Also Ed's "let's save the flag" in San Diego 98. Brilliant.
