This is probably one of the weirdest questions anyone has ever asked BUT... You see when you watch a PJ show, hes a right handed drummer, like his arms cross. But I've been watching parts of the 1992 PinkPop with Soundgarden, and he's drumming left handed.... (This means a lot, cause I'm left handed  )

So my question is, is Matt Cameron left handed? Cause I'm guessing he's just learnt to drum right handed (which I can do too..) but yeah.

Not an answer to your question, but check out The Dismemberment Plan. They do no longer exist as a band but two of the band members were left handed.

groetjes,
Mirella :)

i play the drums and, if you practice you can change about which hand you play. its good fun to do it if you've played a song millions of times and you struggle to kep your concentration, you can cross (right handed) and uncross (left handed) assuming your hi-hats are on the left.

the snooker player ronny o'sullivan can hit shots with either his right or left hand which is a major advantage!

Yup...if you're really damn good, you can interchange which hand you hit the hi-hats with. I'd guess that most good drummers can play simpler beats with their left hand on the hats.

PS - Matt Cameron drives a black Land Rover. There's a little extra info for ya.

Matt can play both ways. He changes from right to left in Soundgarden's Rusty Cage.

is there an audible advantage to that? anyone to distinguish when the switch occurrs?

i'd drive a black land rover too if they didn't break down so much and if i had the kind of $ he had to pay for it and its repairs

Not always. I play guitar right-handed, but I'm a left-handed drummer using a right-handed set.

The second half, or ending part of the song, after the break.

Some interesting timing there. I always wondered how he kept a steady hi-hat beat during that part.

I can kind of do it right-handed, but it's awkward. Trying to do it left-handed is near impossible for me. Would take lots of practice.

You can kinda see him playing lefty on the music video.

I don't think I could keep my arm steady/at a steady pace unless I practiced a lot.

well he isnt really playing left handed, just playing open handed and keeping time with his left. he is a very talented drummer (as you know).

^ Dave A has more talent lol That's my opinion but yeah, I just saw Matt playing left handed, so I thought maybe there was a chance Pearl Jam had/has a left handed drummer.. but all good lol

that is playing left handed. if you use your right hand for the snare and your left on the hi-hat/ride.

But couldnt u place them on opposites sides so that the snare is on the left and the hi-hat/ride is on the right side..
What I mean is wouldnt the drum kit be set up differently for a left or right handed drummer.?

Yes, correct. The drummer I play with is left-handed and his entire kit is reversed from how I'd play it, ie: floor tom on my left, hi hat on my right, etc.

Not just a case of using the left hand to tap the hat, as I Got Memories said, that's more a case of being open handed.

the trouble for left handers playing the hi-hat and snare open handed means they have to cross their hands when playing the ride unless they played it with their right hand (i.e. switch between left handed and right handed playing) its very difficult to play the ride cross handed becuase of where the floor tom usually sits. the solution to this is to move the ride over to the left of the kit.

or you could do what you said, re-arrange the kit so it's exactly opposite from what a right handed drummer would play.

either ways are left-handed ways of playing its just a matter of what your used to and your preference.

So Left handed drummers can drum cross handed or opened handed, and right handed drummers only drum open handed??
