ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.
The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night was postponed.
The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.
Hancock has pitched for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.
Hancock joined the Cardinals before the 2006 season. He has pitched for Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.
What a terrible tradgedy, I feel for the Cardinal fans and Josh's relatives. I had a chance to chat with Josh a few years back and he was a very grounded individual, which is often tough to come by nowdays with professional athletes.

My wife went to Vestavia Hills High School with Josh and she was a diamond doll for the baseball team. She said he was a great person and has nothing but nice things to say about him.

So the guy was drunk, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash. Not a good combination.

Do you guys still think this was a tragedy? I don't at all. It would have been a tragedy had he killed somebody else. This might as well have been a suicide.

its a shame, but i dunno if i would say its a tragedy. i wouldnt compare it to suicide at all.

Why not? I mean, we don't know he did it on purpose, but hadn't basically the same thing happened to him earlier in the week?
The Cardinals seem to have an alcohol problem as an organization. It'd be nice if they came out and recognized it while taking some responsibility for it as well. Walt Jocketty calling this a "wake-up call" is offensive. Does he not remember his manager being found passed out at the wheel not two months ago?

i think that shows he's a bad driver, not that he's suicidal. good point about the cards organization though, i dunno if its just a terrible coincidence or a legit problem
