So the Classic rock station in Austin is trying to change its format. This means they are adding more Nickelback. It's got me thinking, what could classic-rock stations add to their playlists to vary it up some?
Just to give you an idea, here's this station's Itunes selections:
Man in the Box
Manic Depression
Crazy Train
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Blue collar Man
In Bloom
Sex Type Thing
Sweet Emotion
Fell on Black Days
Break on Through
Crossroads
Space Truckin
Love Reigh o'er Me
Run Like Hell
Dani California
Gimme all your Lovin
Tom Sawyer
Stranglehold
Iron Man
World Wide Suicide
I can't think of that much more to add, besides playing cuts from classic albums that don't usually get played.
As far as other bands that a classic rock station could add to the rotation, I can think of King Crimson, Allman Bros, Queen, Small Faces, the Clash, Bowie, and the Stooges. Any other viable suggestions?

I think just do exactly what you said and play some album cuts that aren't worn out, and some more obscure older bands. I love the Doors, Zeppelin and the Stones as much as the next guy, but the same 5 or 6 songs get played to death with every one of them, and they have tons of material that never gets played.

Stations should really play "White Room" more often, if you think about it. That song's probably better than your favorite song.

Unless White Room is your favorite song, in which case White Room can't be better than your favorite song without bending the space/time continuum, something 1970s AOR stations are not capable of doing, to my knowledge.

Couldn't agree more. I really don't need to hear Heart of Gold or Black Dog twice a day, everyday. God forbid they play a song like Salt of the Earth as opposed to Satisfaction.

i don't know why this doesn't occur to radio stations earlier... the rock station here has been getting better. Instead of playing Iron Man and Paranoid all the time, you get Fairies Wear Boots and Snowblind. Hell, they play Breadfan more than Enter Sandman. Plus, I can remember the last time they played Another Brick in the Wall part 2, but they consistently play Crazy Diamond, Pigs, and High Hopes.

the classic rock station around here did that too, they turned into some kind of a mix station where they play classic rock, grunge, 90s alternative, and some current stuff like nickelback.

the station here does "cd sides" where they play half an album in order (what would have been 1 side of a record). i think they do it 2x per day, but i'm only listening to that station while working out at lunch. the rest of the time is spent listening to my itunes and suggestions from you fuckers.
