For those of you white folks who don't know, The RZA is the founder and producer of the renowned hip hop group The Wu-Tang Clan. He spoke out recently about the state of hip hop and the culture it represents:
The RZA wrote:
"Hip-hop is just unbalanced. Right now, rappers are glorifying their hell. How you gonna tell me it's cool to live in the ghetto? Who wants to live where you got rats, roaches, pissy elevators, shootings, killings, rapings, drug addicts, alcoholics, all in a four block radius? "Now, out of nine Wu-Tang members, seven are felons... We were the problem of our communities, but we never bragged about it. We kept moving on about life. "But right now, these hip-hoppers are stuck on one thing. They stuck on sex and violence and drugs and partying. Life is way more than that. Especially the day after the party ends. When you get the f**k up the next day, what you gonna do?"
I thought this would interest those of you who think all hip hop artists are deplorable scum. Thoughts?

I support his comments. Does anyone who knows Wu-Tang's music have anything to back up his "..but we never bragged about it" statement? Unfortunately gloating and talking bullshit is all I've come to expect from hip hop, renowned group or not.

Never been a big fan, but I recall some line about torturing someone who pissed them off by "sowing your asshole shut and keep feeding you and feeding you".

They definitely have some explicit stuff and some really violent passages, but it's more a reaction to the hood than a promotion of it. All of their albums contain some sort of social commentary and songs promoting a better life. "Little Ghetto Boy" and "A Better Tomorrow" come to mind. Here's a verse from the latter:
Inspectah Deck wrote:
Yo, in the housing, thousands seen early graves Victims of wordly ways, memories stays engraved All my live brothers, is locked down with high numbers The young hunger, blind to these lies, they die younger In this New World the Order slaughter men, women, and children Ten feet gates surround the building keep us sealed in The projects, lifeless like a vietnam vet Constant war, sever threats of enemy conquest Crooked cops comb my building complex that's in the rumble Streets are like a jungle, can't let my cypher crumble Vivid thoughts, Devils resort to trick knowledge They kick garbage, lust for chicks and quick dollars I know the pain the game bring, I did the same thing Spaced out in the staircase, performing a sting It's hard to keep control, I bless those who seek a scroll Trying to reach a whole nation and break the sleeper hold Not a role model, I walk a hard road to follow I sold bottles of sorrow then chose poems and novels The gospel was told, some souls it swallowed whole Mentally they fold, and they eventually sold their life and times, deadly like the virus design but too, minute to dilute, the scientist mind
You can't party your life away Drink your life away Smoke your life away Fuck your life away Dream your life away Scheme your life away Cause your seeds grow up the same way

Yeah, but that skit is comedy, not unlike playing the dozens.
There are many more examples in their music of talking about the deplorable conditions in the inner city in a negative light and about the desire to escape and overcome and the reality of getting stuck and succumbing.
