CANBERRA, Australia -- Australian officials want to kill more than 3,000 kangaroos encroaching on the capital, Canberra.
They said the kangaroos are multiplying and eating the grassy habitats of endangered species.
There are about 1,100 kangaroos per square mile in the region -- the highest ever measured for the area.
The plan calls for hiring professional shooters to kill about 3,200 of the eastern gray kangaroos, which can grow to be as big as people. The cull could be completed by July.
Animal rights groups are condemning the plan as "a very cruel, violent way to treat animals." They reject the argument that the cull would prevent the kangaroos from starving to death.
Scientists are planning a test of an oral contraceptive developed for kangaroos in an attempt to thin their numbers.

If the country HAS to rid of these animals, at least do something with the remains.
The #2 rule to a successful business is: never let anything go to waste.
Australia can profit big time by making leather, edible meat, ground bone, etc. out of these kangaroos.

And delicious
Bit more info here http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21 ... 21,00.html RSPCA are giving reluctant support.
A lot of the larger Kangaroo species have really benefitted from white settlements, so much so that they're far more numerous now than they were before European colonisation. Grazing land for sheep and cattle happens to suit some Kangaroos quite nicely.
Reminds me of the Koala situation on Kangaroo Island here a few years back. Koalas are an introduced species on Kangaroo Island and they were decimating certain species of gum trees. I think they ended up culling some of them and desexing some as well. Culling Koalas is a lil more controversial..

The day Ted Nugent killed all the animals The day Ted Nugent killed all the animals He did it so he could bond with his male friends He did so they could broadcast it on ESPN And when the news hit the wire Greenpeace activists where crying in they’re hankies They hadn’t heard anything so awful since the first record by Damn Yankees It was the day Ted Nugent killed all the animals The day Ted Nugent killed all the animals
Imagine that, the motor city mad man in your backyard stalking your cat; scratch fever.
And Bob Barker cried And Ricki Lake tried to save them Noah turned right around in his grave And they were all dead But he was still Ted
He did with his bow in hand Sitting up North in the open air He did it for the Michigan Militia He did it for Fred Bear It was the day Ted Nugent killed all the animals The day Ted Nugent killed all the animals
Cause he had so much respect for wildlife He started tipping over goldfish bowls and chasing Bambi’s mom with a knife Which is the equivalent to having so much admiration for an art museum That you burn all the paintings as soon as you see them It was the day Ted Nugent killed all the animals The day Ted Nugent killed all the animals
Raccoons get in the Garbage (Kill ‘em) Baby seals are too cute (Kill ‘em) Squirrels, yum (Kill ‘em) Orangutans, wang dang that Orangutan (Kill ‘em)
He killed them all, big and small So he could put their heads up on his wall It was the day Ted Nugent killed all the animals
in all seriousness, why not offer kangaroo tags to hunters, or do aussies frown on hunting for some nancy reason?

Indeed. I saw them all over the place in the wild over there. They're kind of the deer equivalent of Oz.
i can't tell, but are you guys pro killing them then?
They already do kill a bunch of them. When I worked there I was on a bunch of different farms. One place I ended up staying in their Sheep shearers quarters which is just a fancy name for a building in the middle of nowhere with a couple beds. Anyway, we were staying there when we were working at the farm and while we were there a roo hunter stayed with us for a few days. He was hired by the farmer to get rid of a few roos since they were a problem to his crops. He worked at night with lights and a gun. So the first time we meet this guy he's standing next to his ute, covered head to toe in blood. His dog sat beside him, also covered in blood and on the back of his ute he had a rack with about 15 dead headless and tail less kangaroos.
So we got to talking to this guy over the next couple days and he works full time killing kangaroos for farmers. Drives around at night with spotlights blasting away at them. It was a weird week.

Yes. But not just for the sake of protecting Canberra. Kangaroo steak... mmmmmmmmmm
Kangaroos are hunted already, by professional hunters. We don't really do amateur hunting here- it's awfully hard to get your hands on a gun. And when people do, it's pretty much always in a shooting range.

they're starving. there are allegedly problems with parasites in the meat also.

The Koala thing seems weird seeing as I saw a report the other day that Koala's are becoming increasingly endangered. Why not relocate them instead of culling them? Weird
