I AM HOLDEN CAULFIELD
I WANT A LEMON COATED AFTERWORLD
IGNORANCE IS SLAVERY
DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER
I AM HOLDEN CAULFIELD
I AM THE MODERN YOUTH
I WANT A LEMON COATED AFTERWORLD
IGNORANCE IS SLAVERY
DOWN WITH THE MEDIA OF BIG BROTHER
I AM HOLDEN CAULFIELD
I AM THE MODERN YOUTH
I AM DISENCHANTED WITH THEIR VALUES
I DONT WORSHIP THEIR GODS
I DONT HOLD THIER IDEAS
I DONT FOLLOW BLINDLY, BECAUSE IGNORANCE IS SLAVERY, SLAVERY TO OUR BIG BROTHER, THE MEDIA TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO THINK, WHO TO BE, WHO THEY WANT YOU TO BE
I WANT A LEMON COATED AFTERWORLD
THEY CALL ME CRAZY BUT I AM HOLDEN CAULFIELD

Its an original composition, drawing influences from Catcher, George Orwell's 1984, and my own discontent.
And personally, I love Catcher, perhaps because I am so much like Holden Caulfield that its rather uncanny. But if you don't get the book, then this wont make sense either.

Well, if you 'got' A Catcher In the Rye you wouldn't have written that poem. The motif of the phony, something Holden ubiquitously denigrates, is present only to show the presence of it in he himself. He is the phony, slave to everything and everyone, the irony being he cannot see it. See his misconception of the song.

Er..If you "got" the poem, you wouldnt have made that post, because the motif of "phonies" in A Catcher In the Rye plays no part in this.

But surely that plays a part in how you feel you relate to Holden? And surely to relate to him in an improper way is to not get the poem?
I'm not having a go, on the contrary, just expressing objectivity.
No not really. The Holden part is just a literary connection to someone being confused with the world. I really wasn't reading into the character or going for very deep symbolism here.

He's confused with himself rather than the world though.
I definately saw him as searching and being confused with both the world and himself. I played off the world aspect for the poems meaning, but when I say that I draw comparisons from myself to him, I also include the self-searching/confused part.

I loved both books and liked your poem, i think he was just going for how holden was unhappy with the way things were. And he could have easily put his own name instead of holdens, right now he is just using holden as and alter-ego. Thats just how I perceived it.
