I guess we just have a lottery thread, so I'll start this one.

Anyway.... Durant was the only player of the 80 at a predraft camp who couldn't bench 185 lbs. Kinda funny.

His coach is defending him.

I know he is the second best player in the draft. Bar. None.

But, it's still pretty funny he's a big pussy.

seriously though. don't you think it's out and out retarded that people would even care about something like bench press for a basketball player?

here's another take from Chad Ford that I agree with. the whole thing reminds me of all the bullshit around VY's Wunderlic score.

Quote:
Here's my take: These results are a very small piece of the puzzle.

These tests have very little to do with basketball skill. They don't measure a player's shooting touch, handle or basketball IQ. Leaping ability is meaningless if the player doesn't know how to get to the basket. No one in the NBA is asked to do a bench press during the game. In fact, core strength is considered much more valuable to prospects.

Want more evidence that the numbers may be meaningless?

Here are the top-rated athletes from the last four combines: Troy Bell, Nate Robinson, Joey Graham and David Noel. Has all that athletic ability helped any of them dominate the league?

I do think the Blazers will take Oden No. 1 and he'll be an excellent choice -- the testing results appear to support that.

But I think the results are less meaningful in the case of Durant.

i understand he has 19.5 feet of arms to push the weight up, and that hes not that muscular, and yes i laughed when i read he couldnt bench 185 but the size of his pecs isnt going to help him in the league

perhaps, but the bench press is typically a pretty fair measure of overall body strength. it's not as though we're laughing at him for not being able to curl 75 pounds with his biceps.
And like it or not, there are a whole lot of very strong, mean, angry guys playing in the NBA who will have very little problem figuratively bitchslapping someone who isn't even in the same ballpark as they are, strength-wise.

I don't think it's a big deal at all. He's extremely young and being on an NBA team he'll be getting the best possible strength and conditioning coaching. He'll have to put on a few pounds to survive, but he's probably more of a 3 than a 4, and won't have to match up against the huge guys every night.

The bench press is not an accurate measure of your strength. Upper body strength yes, but not overall body strength.

compared to, say, a biceps curl or a military press? Would you say that someone of average to above-average strength would be able to bench press his (her) own weight?

the average person cannot bench press their own weight. When I was in good shape I could bench press my own weight 20-25 times but that was after 4-5 years of weight training. Right now I would be lucky to bench press my weight once and I would consider myself someone of above average strength.

maybe you should reconsider. ive always thought benching your own body weight was the best way to messure your strength. where the fuck is sunny to clear this up?

I think the best way to measure your strength is to use a variety of lifts. Also tall people, like previously mentioned, have a much harder time benching. I know a lot of shorter people who can bench more than me, but it doesn't mean they are any stronger than me overall.

he gained 15-20 pounds in his year at Texas. clearly his frame will allow him to gain a lot more weight. like AS says, he won't be matching up against power forwards on the block - he's primarily a perimeter oriented player anyway.

he definitely needs to get stronger - the times when he struggled most last year were when teams got more physical with him and pushed him off the block.

that being said, anybody who thinks how much he can bench makes one bit of difference as to how effective he will be in the NBA is fooling themselves.

i wouldn't be surprised at all if this "confidential" report was leaked by Boston or somebody else in the hopes it might convince a few teams to pass on him.
