I interviewed him over the phone about a year ago. Real nice guy. He insisted that the interview be recorded because he is very particular about being misquoted in the paper. I didn't have the capability to record the interview but was real careful to type good notes.

Does anyone think his affiliation with those Kevin Smith movies will end up hurting his reputation after he's gone, or will people just kind of forget about them?

No, other comedians have done similiar things and are still highley regarded among other comedians and people in general. Richard Pryor for instance did a number of crappy movies in the 80's and lit himself on fire, this doesn't stop him from being listed as one, if not the greatest comics of all time.
Also, Carlin's stand up was his stuff he created it, while most of the movies he appeared in, Bill and Ted for example, where just for the pay check. And I know most comedians still think of him as one of the most influental comedians ever.
Plus he was the Conducter in Thomas Tank Engine, this alone will cement him as one of the greats.

Yeah, after I posted that question I thought about other comedians in horrible movies (Ladybugs, anyone?) and I suppose it's not really an issue. I guess I was thinking more of the younger generation who never saw his stand-up judging him purely on some crappy movies he was in and not identifying the brilliance of his stand-up work.

Something i thought was pretty interesting, is the fact that you can watch his eary 90's late 80's shows, same with bill hicks, and the same jokes could be made today. Like both mention the Bush administration, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and the war in the middle east. Funny how things go in cycles.

I've seen him 3 times and he was awesome every time. His HBO specials have been great except the last couple which were just ok. I saw him in AC on mushrooms and my entire upper body was in pain from the laughter.
Carlin in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure makes up for the Kevin Smith stuff.

however, his last HBO special was just awful, god awful and not a single laugh to be had, and its because ol' george was fresh outta rehab
lets hope he found his way back to whatever he was hooked on, because without it he may have lost the magic
this is true and it was depressing as hell. i thought it had to do with him just losing his magic. you think it was sober carlin that was the prob??
yes I do.
but I wil lsay this. I saw him do that putridly unfunny bit about harvesting dead women's vaginas 3 yrs prior to that last hbo show, and even then when he wasnt sober it was the most uncomfortably unfunny shit ever. I thought since it bombed that night he would never try it again, but he did, word for word, and it just plain sucked.

Piss and Tits are now regularly said on TV, and Shit is a staple on FX.
all those words are said on Cable HBO-lite Dramas except for Fuck. But besides piss, and sometimes tits, those other words are for the most part still not aired. Oh, and CC has their Secret Stash where they claim to be unedited yet they still cut scenes with nudity in them or blur nudity out. But all words are ok.

Life is worth losing was very depressing and just not very good. However, i still laugh everytime i listen to Jammin' or YAD. Just absolutely brilliant. The plane security section on Jammin is legendary. I highly recommend the whole show.

to the point that it sounds forced. like: "Okay, we can say it now, let's put it in as much as possible". i noticed this with the riches, and pretty it pretty much only works in Hugh's scenes. have i mentioned that i love that guy?

I don't think being sober has anything to do with it. He entered rehab for alcohol and painkillers, a combination that lends itself more towards a comatose state than to creativity. I could be wrong, but I recall hearing that he's been clean of coke (and anything he else may/may not have ocaasionally taken in addition to that) since at least the mid-80's (three heart attacks in the late 70's when you're only 40 years old will make you kick your bad habits pretty fucking quick).
As for why it wasn't very good? First of all, I don't think it was as bad as people make it out to be. It wasn't top-shelf Carlin, but it was pretty good. Why hasn't it been received well? Because it was so different. Carlin has reinvented his act serveral times over the years, most notably in the late-80's/early-90's when bitterness and anger became prominent emotions displayed in his material. This latest direction just didn't seem to catch on as it was such a wide departure from his previous stage persona in that he was almost TOO angry and bitter that it overshadowed the cleverness of his material. Carlin's best weapon is mastery of wordplay and the English language in general - when his outward emotions distract from what he's saying, then I think that performance will suffer.
Marsh, I'm sure you'll have a great time. I saw him here in '04 (front row) and he was on top of his game. Enjoy yourself.
