i bought around january. when i try and open, say, itunes, it will take literally a half hour to open most of the other time. i'm not running anything else. other programs take ages too, though not as long as shitty itunes. it refused to start period today and i had to use media player.

what can i do? my brother bought the same computer at the same time and has had no problem. basically, it's ridiculously slow.

Download, update, and run Adaware and Spybot. It could also be a virus

ummm.... hmm.... i don't know. should be five hundred and something, might be two hundred and fifty something

you mean ram, right? i'm so impatient that it's dangerous for me to operate computers without a lot of ram, cos i'm prone to wanting to throw them out the window

I hate to do this to you Laura, but:

I told you so.

Your next laptop will be a mac.

:P

___________

Solutions? You might need to save all your essentials and reformat the hard drive. And yeah, themore RAM the better. That's what lets your computer have its fingers in several pies at once without being a pain in the neck.

Not being a mac has nothing to do with this.

Poor management does.

Upgrade your RAM and don't use iTunes unless you're updating your iPod.

Did it work?

it's still slow but it's not quite as slow, so.

is it true that i can just buy some more ram and stick it in a port on my laptop and it will magically run faster?

Few questions..

What OS do you have? XP?
What brand and model of shit laptop do you have?
What version of iTunes are you running?
What anti-virus program do you have?

p.s. if you are running XP, you can check to see how much RAM you have by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon on your desktop (if you have it there) and then clicking "Properties". You should see the speed and type of your processor there, as well as how much RAM is installed.

Hi Angela

I don't have it with me right now, but from memory:

XP
Compaq... V300? or something
whatever the latest itunes is
AVG.. it's a free one from grisoft which we use at work, never have a problem with it. i have another installed on my laptop as well, norton i think? it's yellow. i've tried to get rid of but it won't let me uninstall it.

i'll check the ram tonight

Alright, the first thing you can try is disabling your AVG before you open iTunes and see if that speeds things up.

But you should at some point try to get rid of that Norton's too. If you've tried to remove it from add/remove programs and it didn't work you can download this removal tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument&lg=en&ct=us&seg=hho&src=hot) from Norton's and hopefully that will get rid of it.

As well, it might be a good idea to disable a lot of the programs that start automatically when your computer starts. Go to Start --> Run and then type in "msconfig". Then click on the "startup" tab.

There will likely be a lot of crap in here checked that you don't need running all the time. Here is a good site where you can type in the name of the startup item in the search box and it will tell you what it is and whether you need it checked or not: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
