fitzy, did you take those pics?

If so, you should post them in the "Release" forum, which is where we have set up for members' art and writing.

I'll move the post if you'd like.

I have a Nikon D70 with stock lense it came with (from best buy)

I want to be a photographer, but have no clue how to start. I submit my stuff into online contests here and there, but thats about it.
I did some high school pictures, and family pictures for friends too.

There's way too many to critique individually. In general, I like it. Your black and white cat has a tendency to get over exposed because of his whiteness. I really like the lighting, but burning out the subject in some critical area's detracts a bit.

The waterfall pictures are really nice. Nice, and fluid, but not fuzzy. The second waterfall is particularly good, well composed, and well exposed.

The close up of the cat and the dog are also well done.

The swamp pics are also very well done.

I would have cut out some of them, if I was selecting shots to make public. Some seem kinda boring. But maybe that's just me.

Nice stuff.

There are some things that I notice in the pictures that would go away if you bought another lense. A D70 is a nice camera. It deserves at least a nice lense.

Did you use a full-size tripod for the outdoor pic?

Also, was was your exposure time for the waterfall pic? 3 seconds or something?

no tripod, just me holding the camera.

the dark sunset over the ocean was actually taken on a moving whale watch boat :)

i think it was a 3 second exposure.

to tell god's honest truth. I have zero knowledge of ISO stops, and FTP setting or any of that stuff. Everything I know is from fuckin around with the camera & trying things. I figured out how to to the water moving thing from looking it up in the manual :)

That exposure is nowhere near three seconds. If he used no tripod, for it to come out like that, I would say it was a sunny day and he has a 1/16th of a second exposure at most. And that's if he had no camera shake.

I have pictures that I took in the dead of night that were taken at 1/13th of a second.

If I was a betting man, I'd say this was about a 1/50th of a second exposure.

Do you have exif data available Fitzy?

Do you have a portfolio of your best work, both indoor (especially family pictures) and outdoor? If not, I'd get something like that together before you do anything else, but keep adding your best work to it.

And I'd also recommend that you begin with trying to photograph weddings. I know it's cheesy, but there is some money in it and it gives you the opportunity to keep taking photographs and building your reputation as a photographer. You seem to have a keen eye for what would make a good photograph, so you can build from that with a small amount of research and learning about f-stops, aperture and all that good stuff. Once you're a little more technically proficient I don't see why you wouldn't be able to find a job.

Good luck, and great work.
