TAMPA, Fla. -- It didn't take Paul Hackett long to land another job.
Less than a week after resigning as New York Jets offensive coordinator, Hackett was hired Monday as quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The move reunites Hackett with Jon Gruden, who spent one season as an assistant under his former mentor when Hackett was the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1990s.
Hackett left the Jets last Wednesday, four days after a 20-17 overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs. He had been under mounting pressure and constant criticism because of his unimaginative play-calling.
Gruden jumped at the opportunity to bring him to Tampa Bay as a replacement for John Shoop.
Hackett, an NFL assistant for 16 years, was with the Jets for four seasons. He and Gruden began discussions Thursday, and talks continued over the weekend.
"Jon Gruden has had remarkable success and continues to be on the cutting edge of offensive football. ... Jon brings so much enthusiasm to the game and I am really excited to be a part of it," Hackett said in a statement.
Although the Jets made the playoffs in three of Hackett's four seasons in New York, he was always the target of criticism. Things only got worse in 2004, when the team struggled to score points, despite having the NFL's leading rusher in Curtis Martin.
Chad Pennington threw for 2,673 yards but just 16 touchdowns, and the Jets ranked 22nd in passing yards.
hacket called really conservative games last year for sure, but at the same time i dont know what other options he had, pennington doesnt have a strong arm, and he had shoulder problems a good part of the year, i think heimerdinger is going to be interesting there because he does like to open it up, but the problem is pennington doesnt have mcnair arm and is not capable of slinging it down the field anywhere near as well as mcnair could, so im not sure anybody can have a big time offense with pennington, i personally think he is way over rated.

I think the change will be good. Pennington was playing with a tear in his shoulder after he returned in December. What that O needs more than anything is a TE that can do more the block well and catch 2 passes for 15 yards. Pennington threw a 55 yard pass (with the bad shoulder) right on the money in the SD game, how much further does he need to throw it? I think you will see some big improvement next year.

yeah but his deep balls just seem to float, hes pretty accurate, and he is pretty good on short and mid range routes but even when his arm is healthy he cant complete passes in tight areas or throw a deep out route because his arm isnt strong enough, it depends on what heimerdinger and edwards are going to do, but there is no way that offense resembles anything the titans were able to do over the last few years because pennington simply cant make all the throws mcnair or even volek can make.

you know what i think of hackett?
If the 95 and 97 chiefs had anybody at OC other then this talentless piece of shit we would have been super bowl champs, our D held the colts in 95 to 10 and the Donks to 14 in 97,and we couldnt even score two fucking touchdowns, god i hate that bastard.

Who said the Jets turn into the Titans overnight b/c of the OC? I would never say he has the strength that they have, I am saying he has enough, and he has more accuracy than either of them. Heimerdinger said he will cater the offense to Chad's strengths, something that dickhead would not do. Do you know they set up out of a shotgun a total of zero times this year? ZERO! This is somehting that Chad thrived in in college. Just a few times a game. is all I am asking for, he had no ability to adjust to what a defense is doing. I think they need a guy much more flexible than Hackett and they will improve significantly over last year.
I am not ready to give up on Chad just yet, he hasn't even made it through an entire season yet (yes, that may be an issue if it continues). His W-L record as a starter is pretty good, he is 2-2 in palyoff games including a win on the road.

well i know they arent turning into the titans over nite, but you know they brought heimerdinger in to open it up some, and my point is i think your somewhat limited with what you can do with chad, hes not a bad qb dont get me wrong, i just think he has a weakness that is hard to over come and limits you offensively to an extent, i think they should look into what gannon did with the raiders a few years ago and basically be a dink and dunk team, i think he would be fine in that type of system.

Chad's major problems are that he needs to stay healthy and not be sensitive to the media, The guy played with a torn RC, he needs surgery and it will be fixed, in college, 65 % of the time, pennnington worked out of the shotgun, for an offense today not have a shotgun is nuts, especially with the DE"S these days

It won't hurt if he was throwing to Randy Moss like he did in college. But yeah I agree the guys just needs to stay healthy. Prior to him getting hurt this year you never really heard much concern about his arm strength.

but he had one really good year, and then people decided he was a top tier qb, which hes not, hes a slightly above average qb in my opinion. i think you never heard about it because the first year when he replaced vinny he played well, last year he was hurt most of the year, so this was really only his second year to be a big part of the jets offense and people finally started to realize that this kid isnt that great, and lack of arm strength is a big reason why hes not that great.

Whenever he's been healty he's been great. Even when he came back this year and played hurt he was still better than most QB's. Did you see the throw he made to Moss in San Diego game?

hes not been great, hes been a nice compliment to martin and a very good defense, which im not a jets fan, so i didnt see every game, but i saw probably 5 or 6 games this year and im not overly impressed with him. (plus i spent a pretty high fantasy pick on him last year and he blew balls, i did win the championship thanks to billy volek and brian griese though ).
