Don't know how many folks here will have heard this album, but I just bought it today and it's incredible. 43 punk-ish songs packed into 75 minutes, astonishing bass/guitar/drums interplay, tons of energy. Great album.

It's funny you started this thread now because I just listened to this album on Saturday night. Just an amazing piece of work, really. It blends so many styles and genres - incredible. A must-have for any fan of music.

I've had this album for a couple years now. It was recommended to me by "the new guy in PD's office", and it is his favorite album of all time.

I don't know, I just wasn't that impressed. Firstly, it's all bass-based licks, which I find really boring. They just don't sound different enough from one another to justify having 43 little one-minute tracks. Some are great, some are really meh. And I fucking hate when the songs come up on shuffle, which because there are 43 of them, is far too often.

I was very disappointed that this album just didn't do it for me.

If this were a Neil Young album you'd have nothing but praise for it.

"Corona" is one of the best songs of all time.

I find it hard to get through the whole thing 'ese days.

Zen Arcade was the true SST masterpiece.

It's a good bridge from the 80s underground stuff to the truer stuff, with the Van Halen and Steely Dan covers, and the band's wish that people listen to those bands unironically.

Neil did an album that was one track that was 43 minutes long...

Hehe. Yeah, I don't have that album in my mp3 player. But I do have "Arc, The Single".

This record is a staple. They were the best band of the 80s.

Maybe I'm wrong but I get the impression not many people here have heard this album and or maybe just discovering it? Thats a damn shame. I guess everyone is just too busy downloading leaked ryan adams albums and safe white-boy rap. But I digress. The Minutemen were a great band, with great ethics and an excellent catalog. This album sometimes overshadows the rest of their output, which is maybe the one negative aspect of double nickels. Check out "Buzz or Howl" "What Makes a Man Start Fires" and "Project Merch" which features possibly the best cover ever recorded.

Anyway if you really do give damn about this band, go watch the documentary "We Jam Econo"

Regarding the title, Curley you're right that when they heard that Du was doing a double album, they wanted to do one too. It also has something to do with the radio hit of the time being Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55." Watt said they decided well, we ARE going to drive 55, but just in a different direction...sideways. So, double nickels on the dime means doing 55 on interstate 10.

Has anyone here checked out any of the Firehose stuff (Mike Watt's band after the Minutemen ceased)? I think it's pretty good, but doesn't really hold a candle to this.

I've tried to get into firehose, but I never had much luck. Of course, Walking the Cow is great, and I have a really cool instrumental version of "Blaze" off of some odd alternative compliation. But my favorite firehose song is the beautiful "In Memory of Elizabeth Cotten".

Watt post Boon is a little tough for me to get fully into. Tugboat has its moments, but it comes off as bloated to me. But I have heard wonderful things about his "Engine Room" concept album .

Is that the one that's pretty much about Boon? If so, I heard great things about that as well but never sought it out.
