I made a pretty big change to the mix. Brought the rhythm section up, did some EQing.
Think of it as Spoon playing gypsy music. Or a seizure brought on by local tribute acts.
This song fell together and was recorded in one 2 hour session. Ridiculously fun....between us we were able to come up with ideas really quickly.
It's not going to end up on any sort of release, I don't think. I thought about saving it for the tournament, but that'll be too late for what is really a summer song. Besides, I've got so damn many of 'em lying around.
Another instrumental was cut at the same time, and we're hopefully going to take a night and map that out later this week. The b-side, I guess.
Speak of it to me.

Thanks. The new mix is also available at http://www.garageband.com/artist/52ndstreet, if you can get it there, dea. It's just a lot better sounding, I think, then that first one.
As for lyrics: like I said before, it was a whirlwind session. I put the guitar track down, and then went upstairs to try and come up with some lyrics while the bass was put in. I had maybe 20 minutes, so I only came up with one real verse. I didn't have anything else when it came time to sing, so I just altered lines from the first verse for each subsequent part. Made it up as I went. That first section:
Sun in the sky Wink of an eye Let the doubters all doubt It must be summertime now The Kiss cover bands have their pyrotechnics out
The heat prevents me from thinking of anything So I think a lot about that Meanwhile an engine fails on the right wing Suddenly everyone's worried about the safest place to land

my favorite part, music specially. this song really deserves a second and maybe a third section, man! keeping my favorite lines and changing the two lines that follow. the music is too good for just repetitions, you know?

dude, i like this a lot. i actually think the lack of melody sort of makes the song instead of hurting it. it's got a real upbeat feel to it, where as the lyrics contradict this feeling somewhat. awesome job.

Thanks, cono. The nonmelodic delivery is important to it, I think. And it must work to some degree, because I've already had a stronger reaction to this song locally than I've ever had to any song, solo or band. We're still planning on finishing a b-side to it later this week, but I've to be burning CD-R's like mad anyway.
I think I'll be a dick and explain a bit about it so that I can ruin any other possible interpretation.
A close friend of mine, someone who actually plays on the song, has been trying to take a break away from relationships for a while. Of course when you meet someone it doesn't matter what you're trying to avoid. So he's falling for this girl, quickly, here at the start of summer, and kind of watching this very structured choice he made fall apart around him. But it's not a bad thing, because he's got that start-of-something high going on.
So, for example, the "suddenly everyone's worried about the safest place to land," is less a panicked disturbance than an amused reaction to the fact that so many of his friends are doing stupid things like warning him not to get in too deep too fast, or predicting heartbreak.
It's an incredibly upbeat song, I think. Almost everything in the song is a direct reference to something he and I experienced together in the days before it was written, right down to him showing up on my doorstep coated in sweat and muttering "It must be summertime, now." He also happens to be a pilot, hence the flight references.

this is the first time i've ever listened to any of your stuff (myspace is blocked at work).
i must say, i liked this alot! super upbeat, very summer-y (like you said). i think you nailed it with your gypsy/spoon comment.
i will have to wander in here more often...
Thanks!
I've gotta tell you guys, I'm on cloud nine. It seems like every time I put something out it helps me spice up the studio. I have nice mics (some of them way out of my price range, actually), and a few quality pres, but I had nothing really for the drum overheads. Thanks to this song, I now have an ART MPA Gold, which is not as nice as most of the other stuff I'm using but a step up from the overhead pres I had before. Plus I got some nice, $40 tubes to replace the ones that come in it.
I'm going to have to redo the drums for the solo record, I think. They're sounding great.
