MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A student whose vacation plans were spoiled has sued to end summer homework in Wisconsin, claiming it creates an unfair workload and unnecessary stress.

Peer Larson, 17, had lined up a dream camp counselor job last June, but honors pre-calculus homework turned his summer into a headache.

"It didn't completely ruin my summer, but it did give me a lot of undue stress both at home and at work," the high school junior said Thursday. "I just didn't have the energy or the time for it."

Larson and his father sued in Milwaukee County Circuit Court seeking the end of summer homework across the state. They argue that homework shouldn't be required after the required 180-day school year is over.

"These students are still children, yet they are subjected to increasing pressure to perform to ever-higher standards in numerous theaters," the suit said.

School administrators have told the family that honors courses require some summer work.

Whitnall School Superintendent Karen Petric told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the district did its best to address the Larsons' concerns.

"I strongly believe the district acted appropriately and didn't do anything wrong," she said. "Court is not the place to solve it."

While students will probably root for the Larsons, lawyers contacted Thursday questioned the suit's legal grounds. Larson and his son had acted as their own legal counsel.

"This is the sort of thing that has been traditionally handled by school boards," said attorney Thomas R. Schrimpf. Another attorney, Timothy Baldwin, predicted the case would be dismissed.

The January 10 lawsuit names a math teacher, three school administrators and the state's superintendent of public instruction. Wisconsin's attorney general's office will assign a lawyer to respond to the suit, said spokesman Brian Rieselman.

As much as I hated homework and feel this kid's pain, he needs to suck it up. I don't know what kind of workload honors pre-calc involves (I hated and was horrible at math), but I had to do it for English and American Lit. and US History courses and it usually involved reading a book or two and writing a 2-3 page paper on them. It sucked, but honestly, you have 3 months to do it, and I worked full time during the summers too.

It's a fucking HONORS class!!! If you don't want the extra homework, take a lower level course.

My last name is very similar to this student's. Anywho, i think that summer homework is uncalled for and probably not very effective. But to sue the school over it is going way way too far.

Pretty damn dumb. I would understand if all students were required to do summer homework, but this is for an honors course. To me, that means going the extra few yards. If you want to compete in advanced placement classes, you need to put in more effort then the average student. Really ridiculous. I guarantee you this ass is spending more time on this lawsuit then spending the time it would take to just do the work.

My first thought is, ... yeah, it's an honors course, you could take something lower. I would, however, really like to know what the homework entailed. I highly doubt that it was worthing suing over. How much do you want kids to be coddled? If he doesn't learn to deal with the stress of a few math problems at 17, he's not going to make it through his first 2 years of college, his first 8 jobs, his first 3 marriages, or his first 48 hours of begging on the streets. Take some Zanax and shut up!

I hope the kid wins. I took honors classes in High School and was never required to do any work over the summers. Put this in a different context; you are on a two week vacation from work, some of the only precious time you get off from your job all year, and on your way out the door your boss lays a bunch of work on you to do on your vacation. This is no different if you ask me. The dad makes a good point, kids are kids. Let them have a break after they put in the required time for a school year.

I remember we used to get summer reading assignments. I thought it sucked but I never thought about suing the school. I just never read any those books.

You're right - who wouldn't want to fight to make honors students lazy coddled little bastards. It's the honors class! If you're not up for the work, don't take it. It's very simple. There are plenty of classes this kid could have signed up for that didn't require summer homework. He wants this class because it will look great on his college applications but he doesn't want to do the work. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

It's really saddening that his parents are supporting this bitchfest.

Where I went to HS everybody got summer homework not just the honor students. I'm not sure its safe to assume she could have avoided summer homewrok by taking different classes.
