Bill Walsh, ex-San Francisco 49er coach, dead at 75
July 30, 2007

San Francisco - Bill Walsh, the legendary San Francisco 49ers former head coach, has died at age 75.
Bill Walsh, the legendary San Francisco 49ers former head coach, has died at age 75.

Walsh was head coach of the 49ers from 1979 to 1988. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers.

Walsh, nicknamed "The Genius," was 75 years old.

Walsh went public with his battle with Leukemia in November 2006, saying he had been diagnosed in 2004.

He played football for and graduated from San Jose State University in the 1950s.

Walsh coached the 49ers for 10 years, winning three Super Bowls with the team in the 1980's. He was coach of the year twice, and inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 1993.
Leukemia

In November 2006, Walsh confirmed that he is undergoing treatment for leukemia. "News about me has been circulating," he said. "It's been getting back to me. The media has been aware of the possibility of this and has refrained from writing.

"There are too many people following the progress of this. I felt it was appropriate to confirm what's happening. I hope now that I have done that, the media will refrain from phoning me.

"I'm pragmatically doing everything my physicians recommend and I'm working my way through it," Walsh said.

Jesus...once again, the famous deaths come in 3's...Tom Snyder, Ingmar Bergman, and now Walshy.

What a fantastic coach of a great franchise under his reign. He's probably my favorite coach since I've been watching football, which is roughly 1986. RIP, old friend.

Without a doubt one of the top 5 coaches in NFL history. Amazing how many head coaches have the Walsh pedigree and how many teams still run his offense more than 25 years after it was implemented

That just about says it all, except that he seems to have been a wonderful human being as well.

He was a little before my time but he did a lot for the modern game of football and he was a great coach.
