Don't know if anybody else saw this in the Washington Post today, but check it out:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... inionsbox1

The possible conflict between Kurdistan and Turkey scares me more than any other place in the world right now, because assuming the invasion takes place, it cannot possibly end well. Neither end is good for us. Of course that seems to be Iraq in a nutshell right now, but it almost seems like there is no lesser of two evils anymore. Any direction we turn is an equally shitty situation.

I also can't help thinking this has something to do with Turkey's recent Islamic success in their elections. Meddling has proven disastrous for this administration. I can't help but see a cacophony of completely negative results from this action. It sure doesn't increase our appeal with the Kurds, who don't even consider themselves Iraqis, by and large. Does that mean we don't give a shit about them?

What a fucking maelstrom.

The Kurds could defuse it themselves by trying to reign in PKK. I don't think Turkey is the primary instigator at the moment.

I'm not that worried about this. The main Turks pushing for an invasion were the military leaders and this big election win for the ruling party gives the PM some breathing air and less pressure from the military.

I'm far more concerning about the destabilization of Pakistan.

Yeah, also from what I've read we're doing covert stuff with Turkey to go after the PKK to avoid an invasion. So at least we are showing them that we are on their side in having zero tolerance for this crap.

You're right about Pakistan as well...a collapse of Musharraf's government and an emergence of an extremist one would be far worse.
