Dirty Frank is easily my favorite song from the Ten era, and not just because it features my name. It's a very fun, catchy song with some absolutely stellar lyrics from Ed (yes, I'm serious). Nowhere as profound as Release or State of Love and Trust, Dirty Frank just tells a comical story about a not-so-comical subject: cannibalism and serial killing.
By now I'm sure we all know the origins of the lyrics, so there's no need to go into that mythologized story. Some of these lyrics are just really clever, most notably the line from the thread title. And some of Ed's rhymes here are great: "expedient" and "ingredient" being the most flashy. The narrative of Dirty Frank tells a story, which is a style of writing that Ed has always been quite comfortable with, and often-times excelled at. This one, though, shows more of a sense of humor than a song like Jeremy.
Regarding DF's musical structure, some people don't care for it. Some say it's a Chili Peppers rip-off (who the band were touring with at the time), but I don't really hear that. I can hear an influence, but nothing more. And when some criticize it for going on too long after the narrative is done, well, even Ed tells the band that it's time to end the damn song already.
One thing I never understood about the song, however, is the Shaft reference ("that Dirty Frank was a bad mutha..."). It doesn't really bother me; I just wonder if Ed has ever given a reason to pay homage to the Shaft theme in this particular song. He may have just liked the phrase and wanted to use it for his story. Perhaps we'll never find out.
Because of the aforementioned flaws, this one gets 4 stars from me. Oh, and for the love of God, I'm referring to the original b-side version, NOT the version on Lost Dogs. The remixed version is too muddled and just doesn't sound right. And much thanks to our fearless leader Buggy for providing the live audio clip from the first post.

Kickass song. It might be a little long, and it's not one of my top favorite Lost Dogs, but I really like it. It's smartly stupid, unlike something like Sweet Lew or Red Dot. It's got some Chili Peppers influences, but it's not a ripoff.

I saw this song live. For a minute I was like "hell yeah, I'm seeing Dirty Frank live". But after a while I actually would have preferred to see about anything else instead. Not a fan.

A good fun piece of music - i gave it 4 stars.
MUCH prefer the original version over the Lost Dogs one (mainly for the fact they skipped the 'cook em' lyric section out). And also the original version has sooo much cool background stuff going on (creepy noises, the sound of someone butchering someone), it's always a fun listen

I love this song. It's not five stars, but that doesn't make me love it any less.
I can still remember the day I got the Even Flow single and first heard this song. It was March 17, 1993, I got it for about $10, and even though I was hoping to find the alternative Even Flow used in the video (the "re-recorded"), I was perfectly happy with getting Dirty Frank and the Oceans remix.
You can call it a Chilis "ripoff". I'll call it an "homage". "Cook her! Just to see the look on her face, cook her just to see the look on her face." Clearly, the Chilis style and references were intentional, and you have to remember that Eddie went way back with the Chilis, a hell of a lot longer than he'd been involved with Seattle music. To have the opportunity to open for one of your favorite bands in the world, that must have been huge.
And I agree with Frank, I think the lyrics are brilliant, some of the best Ed has ever written. They masterfully walk the line between silly and smart, and the cadence is well crafted and well-adhered to.
Big four stars for PJ's first funky-as-fuck tune.

That's exactly what I thought it was when I first heard it. It's uncanny.
Really? Perhaps you know the pre-BSSM Chili catalogue better than me and you have a better comparison to draw from. I've heard those records, and a lot of it just sounds pretty loose and sloppy to me. Dirty Frank is much tighter and has it's own groove, IMO.

5 stars for me, i love everything about it indeed the same version frank was talking about (european ten edition) not the one on lost dogs, it's far less exiting. i don't think it's too long, it's just a really cool jam and it works well.
