A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported today.
Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was four.
"The pencil went right through my skin - and disappeared into my head," Wegner told the newspaper.
It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.
At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.
The majority of the eight-centimetre pencil was taken out in an operation at a private Berlin clinic, but the two-centimetre tip had grown in so firmly that it was impossible to remove.

So when I was about 14 we were on holidayin France someplace and I collapsed and had a fit. They took me to a hospital and did an x ray on my skull and found some sort of obstruction in my ear which they figured may have been causing the problem so they pump out my ear and it turns out to be the eraser of the end of a pencil. I have no idea how it got there.

When my older brother was five or so, my aunt dared him to shove a pea up his nose. He did, of course. Then they forgot about it. A couple of years later he went to get his tonsils out, and the doctors found a weird obstruction in his nose that could affect his breathing during the tonsil removal. So they extracted...the pea, of course! Skin had grown over it. Hilarity ensued.
