Not the song... but the message board. Many Fans Converging. I was a member of it back in the day (mid to late 90s), but then I stopped visiting it. Then it was gone... or moved to a secret location... or something. Anyone know what ever happened to it?

I was a member too. Apparently, there were some "behind-the-scenes" arguments going on. Basically, some people didn't like each other very much and this resulted in personal attacks on some of the founders of 5H and MFC. This was the message after they closed the board down:
"MFC was the 5h message board-tape trading board-chat room-hangout. Based on overwhelming consensus from members, the board has outlived its usefulness and has been closed for good. It will not reopen. Thanks to everyone who participated over the years."
It seems that some members at the time opened up a sort of invite only board called Strangest Tribe but I was actually too dissapointed with MFC shutting down that I stopped being active on mesageboards for a while. Too much stupid bickering. I'm glad there is something like the Bugs mailinglist where people respect each other for who they are. RM is nice too, most of the time.

I think I got me some boots off of it from the 96 and 98 tours. And a two cassette compilation of the 96 tour that was assembled by fans from various boots. It was called something like Full of Code... although that doesn't sound exactly right. Kudos to whoever put that together. I wonder what I ever did with it.
The UI on the Delphi boards was really horrible, IIRC.
RM is a sensible board with normal people (for the most part, there's still people like Geg here). The MFC board seems like it was a warzone.
As a former MFC member, I agree that you never knew what to expect every time you visited the board. I realize that certain people were subjected to terrible treatment so perhaps shutting it down was wise if it reduced the "drama" in their lives. Shutting the board down probably had something to do with the demise of 5h too since Caryn and/or Jean weren't as "passionate" about PJ at a certain point in their lives. Either way, MFC and 5h certainly enhanced the PJ fan community in their heyday. At least people are generally more respectful on RM than they were on MFC.

Oh yeah, and forgiveness is difficult. To this day I cannot forget being ganged up on by 4 different memebers in one thread because I admire Vedder as an artist. It's difficult to let go. There are people I barely speak to because of this.
One of the good things about MFC was that it was behind the Delphi firewall and unsearchable to Google. It's good because some of what was said to people was pretty terrible.

seriously.. . "passionate" = stalkerish
some of those 5h concert reviews attest to this... i know its not the case, and i got slammed last time by pd for making the joke, but given i'm saying its a sarcastic, i think that alleviates the "serious" factor... the story ed told in the RS article last year about the woman he references in Lukin--- i put caryn in that category, in my little head

I enjoyed my time on MFC but I spent most of my time on there trading. I found it intimidating to post about Pearl Jam a lot of times because some people would instantly attack if they didn't agree with you instead of developing a conversation about the topic. Definitely some good people on there though. I remember the invite only follow up as well, but never looked into it.

I really liked MFC. I was a member but didn't post too often.
I wrote Caryn an email about 5 years ago asking why the board disappeared. She wrote back with a very nice response but didn't exactly explain what happened. Here is part of what she told me:
"While we were also sad to see it go, we were put into a position by a very vocal minority where we had no choice. They didn't like the way we ran the board, and to be honest, we didn't like what the board had become. While we definitely wanted a more intelligent discussion level, we didn't like how insider and elitist it became towards the end. That wasn't *our* intention at all."

Many people were bullied and intimidated on MFC when going against the 'party line'. Unfortunately that continued on the invite only board as well. So it seems Caryn wasn't the only problem, but she certainly set the tone in the first place, for that kind of attitude.

guys, please try to refrain from mentioning caryn in these posts. She complains about it to buggy and it isn't worth the headache
