I know lists are never usually good, and most leave off way to many good choices and this one probably has as well, but if you are new to sci-fi books and want a good place to start then this is a great list.

Not a bad list.
I'd suggest everything by William Gibson, everything by Elisabeth Hand (didn't see her mentioned), and a lot of additional books by the authors on that list.

I'd also include everything by Ian McDonald as well, if he's not on that list- and Neil Stephenson is pretty fantastic too. heh, so is Sheri Tepper.

I don't really even look for individual book titles, just authors I know won't let me down.

the hyperion series is the greatest sci-fi book series of all time.
