Is there really a big divide where each gender (M/F) identify with their own gender with regards to movies/comedy and to a lesser degree music?

Looking at the movie tournament, female actresses were generally forgotten, and were selected with a MUCH lower percentage.

Also, looking at the Scrubs thread, which I just read. I'd probably rate the characters at about the same levels, with the two female roles in last.

Even looking at Seinfeld, how many people would rate elein(sp?) above alot of the other folks?

I'm gonna say yes.

Good thread btw, this could prove interesting.

i rate elaine very highly, but only because i'm in love with her

interesting topic.

i think women are getting more recognition in comedy though with people like wanda sykes, maria bamford, sarah silverman, etc.... i've never really thought women comedians were very funny (ellen, paula poundstone - anyone remember her?), but these newer women are telling more "manly" humor in way, and i've found them much funnier. Older women comedians seemed to only cater to strictly female audiences, now it seems like many are trying to appeal to everyone, with some appealing to more male sensibilities.

I mean, sentimentallity aside, as well as physical adoration, men do not seem to appreciate alot of women (especially in comedy) but even in movies (exemplified by the small sampling of people in the music tournament) people do not generally rate women actors above men. I know this is an over simplified statement for a small sub section of people, but it is none the less a trend, I believe. I also agree about the manly humour, and i'd add shocking (ala silverman). I'm not sure how it is from a women's standpoint, but I could imagine some of them liking MORE female acts, and not liking someone like Dane Cook(who men seem to love, whether or not YOU like him or not).

I don't want to shift this discussion to any particular movie, but I would like to use a recent one as an example. A lot of my male friends have absolutely hated on Death Proof to no end, and I see a lot of complaining on the net about how "it was just a bunch of bitches babbling", etc. The problems is, Tarantino movies have always been a bunch of people babbling, and that's part of the appeal. These same people love similar dialouge coming from male actores but seemed to loathe it from these women when personally I didn't see much difference there. Part of the reason why, I think, is that the main audience for the film was males and they would have gone for something like that more had it not been "a bunch of bitches" or whatever. Just my thoughts, like I said, I don't want to shift on to just that movie but I do think it's a good example.

I haven't seen it, but it happens in alot of movies I think.

I think there was a bigger divide before than now- there weren't roles out there for women that were as challenging as I seem to have seen over the last maybe 10 or 15 years.
I think traditionally women in movies were expected to support the men's roles as lead characters rather than be dynamic characters themselves.

I don't know if there's a real preference for me personally to watch a female character- or something more that I'd relate to in a woman actor than a man, but then again, I think a lot of the dialog attributed to women in movies has been written by men anyway so there's not much substantive interest to begin with- What I'd like to see is more realistic women's roles. Characters with depth and complexity, actually,. I'd like to see that in men's roles too, but there's traditionally been more of an opportunity in men's roles for that kind of acting anyway...
Maybe there should be more women screen writers.

I like the way the female characters have been portrayed in Judd Apatow's movies. They're usually just as smart and sympathetic as the male characters, if not more so. Knocked Up, for example, handled the female characters really well.

I had problems with the dialogue in Death Proof, but it really didn't have anything to do with them being female. They were talking about nothing at all really.

proof that Arts&Entertainment would rather talk about nothing.

I guess it's slightly changing, but some of the ones you listed aren't really that great to hear more than once, imo. Sykes gets REALLY annoying. Silverman is hit and miss, because some of her songs are complete shit. I guess it may just be because the women have to attempt some kind of new comedy to match up? Dane Cook does simple jokes, but screams them, and he is extremely popular. If a women tried that she'd probably be labelled completely different.
