There I said it.
Binaural they pussied out but had an interesting idea going Avocado was fucking great, no doubt but...where are the chances? They are too talented.
Live? start telling the audience to fuck off maybe and start doing what you really want to do. if that means cutting your audience down to theater size, im fine with that, good.
I dont know what constitutes stepping out of their comfort zone but i think its time for something to be done. Go into the studio and record an album in a weekend and sell it online.
Write 20 minute songs and do what you do best.
Why did i think of this? cause its friday and I have a coffee buzz and im listening to neil young ordinary people. When neil young released greendale i believe some of the crowds werent very receptive to it, he told them to fuck off and contiued to play it. I dont see pearl jam ever having the balls to do such a thing.
of course pearl jam fans are the most whiney of the bunch, but i thikn there is a collective of fans willing to stand with the chances they are capable of taking.

62strat, I really love you.
I don't know what their comfort zone is either, but after this past year and all of the love that's come their way, it seems like they might feel comfortable being out of their musical comfort zone.

perhaps. i think they are "comfortable" enough now...what with al lthe tv performances, online stuff, video, big tour etc..etc.. that they can push the boundaries more. Or at least for an album...

Concept album. Take 80 minutes and tell me about the life of Howard Zinn, Bob Dylan, Noam Chomsky, or Johnny Ramone.

I've been thinking about this for a while.
I dont think they can do much different considering their age and place in life.
I could see that Matt doing some interesting stuff with the drums. Maybe like drumming along to a drum machine and filtering into a synth and getting some crazy beats. I think that would be cool. I really liked "You Are" and thought they can do something in like that but faster.
To do something really different "musically" Stone and Mike would have to put the guitars away which will never happen. So i think Pearl Jam is going to remain Pearl Jam.

eh, theres ways to push it. most of their sid eprojcets are more eclectic than pearl jam ever are as a whole, so the ability is there.
And listening to some of eds instrumentals for Into the wild, specifically the tom waitsish one with electric guitar and harmonica, it can definitely be done.
nothing wrong with pearl jam staying pearl jam, but they pushed it with no code, they are only more talented and knowledgeable as musicians the older they get.
Not even just muscially, but live take even more chances, if the fans dont like it, fuck em...

I'm curious how this is any different than those who complained about the dvd...
It reminds me of my poli sci instructor at university, who said the political spectrum is not left-right, but a circle, with fascism and communism on top of each other at the same point on the circle: ideologically, they are 360 degrees apart, but functionally, they behave identically.

i full appreciate pearl jam and their music, and absolutely loved avocado and every show ive seen...
however, pearl jam is far too talented to stay complacent with just straight forward (albeit amazing) rock songs....

I dissagree. I don't think they felt "uncomfortable" making No Code, or they pushed anything musically. I don't think it was hard to make songs like In my Tree-Who you are-Around the Bend-Off He Goes-Present Tense-Sometimes. I just don't. Maybe it was uncomfortable to Sony, or the fans, but not Pearl Jam.
I guess what im thinking is that it would be cool for them to dip into a genre that they know nothing about. That's when things get uncomfortable. With that and bringing their own musicianship, I think something cool could be born.
Them making a bunch of songs on acoustic guitar with a harmonica or something like that doesnt interest me nor does that classify as them pushing the envelope.
