OCALA, Fla. (AP) - Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.
The boys were charged with making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony.
The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.
"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.
The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.
They were also suspended from school.
One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.
Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.
Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.
i would want to see just how mentally challenged these kids are before i pass judgement.
i worked with a girl at pizza hut who was legally "retarded" and yet you could carry on a perfectly good conversation with her and she had her wits about her more than most of the people there

First off - it's so completely normal for 9-10 year old boys to draw stuff like that.
Secondly, if they're special needs on top of that, arresting them is just absurd.
Maybe take them aside and have a discussion with them about why they drew the pictures, and how it's wrong to do such things in real life. Anything beyond that is over reacting.

Lets step back for a moment and just assume that these students are relatively "average". I want someone to justify how this is a felony. This is art, plain and simple, and no prosecutor on earth is going to be able to prove the intent of their drawings. Sure, its in poor taste. But does that require the children be handcuffed in the classroom? Whatever emotional damage these kids caused pales in comparison to forced apprehension at 9 fucking years old.

Zero tolerance, man, ever heard of it?
If we leave it to teachers and administrators to THINK before they take action, they might make a mistake. With zero tolerance, we eliminate any possibility of that happening. Thinking that is.

It should be noted that this is not the first time this child had to tolerate the acts of the other two children.
I am the mother of a child who is the smallest in his class. He was often bullied because of it. I taught him that someday he would crawl in a hole and save a puppy. He would be the only one able to fit. He then taught this to his classmates. He is very well liked, greatly respected and has lots of friends.
I don't think that we should have to except it when people dismiss it as, kids can be so cruel. Are we that dumb that we can't teach our children to love one another? If not, handcuff them and take them away.

Thats cute, but its also a fallacy of composition. Can't we teach our children to love? Its hard to express the emotion of love to someone as you handcuff them and place them behind bars. (I wont get into the sadomasochistic overtones of that statement and no one else should either).
Lets present this from another perspective, what if the child in handcuffs was your son? My view is the school system has succeeded in doing nothing more than indoctrinating this child with the belief that he is a criminal. At the 4th or 5th grade level these pupils have usually not developed the cognitive skills to understand the consequences of their actions (half of you still cannot), this concept is quite relevant in this case. I pray someone takes this case and files a counter-suit against the Marion County Schoolboard. (BTW I am a byproduct of this fine institution...)

Colombine heritage... don't let them grow up and actually stab or shoot their classmates... in my time (ok, it was a looong time ago, but, anyway), those kids would be sent to a psychologist, not to jail. but, things were different then, all is different now...

That's cool. I have a brother who is very obese and get teased for it. My parents just told him that he would beat the other kids in a Big Mac eating contest and he told the other kids that too. The other kids still made fun of him though.

I just drew pictures of nuclear bombs and mushroom clouds dropping on this kindegarden grade drawing of a house, which I labelled the white house. I'm expecting guys with automatic assault rifles to barge through the door any time now.

i get "talked to" all the time by my son's teachers. some parents are proud of their honor student, some of their athelete, i'm proud of my artist. he has a very definate talent and possesses abilities far beyond most 20 year olds i know at the age of 11. his drawings are usually of dinosaurs, robots, and half men/robots. he has even drawn a total of 3 complete comic books with dialogue, panels, etc. so when his teachers talk to me and say "we're concerned about steven's drawings" i say, yeah, i'm concerned too, i'm concerned that you're going to inhibit him. they don't like when i do that.
