Rick Ankiel. After his grand slam tonight (his 5th HR since being called up, 37th this year including his minor league totals) led the Cardinals to a win and within 2 games of the Cubs, its getting harder to believe that this is just a publicity thing, and it really is amazing to think that he has become a "big league" hitter in less than 3 years (minus injury time). I am obviously biased, but who else has a better story?

I had to work tonight and was emersed in our coverage of the opening night of High School football, but glancing at the ticker a few times it did look utterly hopeless, i have to admit. That HR was huge, i equate it to Scott Sezios 3 run triple from last season, a season changing hit. And how about the bullpen? The one thing the Cards have going for them is timely hiting, and the best bullpen in the game hands down. After another putrid go of it by Anthony Reyes, we may have seen his last start of the year, especially with Mark Mulder and Mike Maroth looming. A rotation of
- Adam Wainwright (one of the top 5 starters in the league since the All Star game) -Braden Looper (He's proven thus far to be able to keep the team in most games and when he is on is very good) -Joel Pinero (A nice under the radar aqquisition so far) -Mark Mulder (If he can return to anything even close to what he was, will be an asset to the team down the stretch, esp. with his fresh arm) -Mike Maroth and/or Todd Wellmeyer (Not gonna ask much from these 2, just eat innings and keep the team in games... Please no more starts for Kip Wells or Anthony Reyes!!!)
I think any Cards fan could live with this rotation for the playoff run, especially given the injuries and how rediculously bad SP was to begin the year. Anthony Reyes =single biggest waste of talent out there....

that's pretty good, laura. ankiel's an ok story but i'm not sure it's the best story of the year. i think peyton finally winning the big one is much bigger considering people all the way back to college say he would never 'win the big one,' and he hadn't (though it's a bullshit thing, i know, but it's a good story).

Ankiel is comeback player of the year (or decade). This story should get more play, but it's happening in the midwest. If this were happing in LA, NY, Boston, or Philly it would be getting a lot more play.

Seriously, I disagree with Ankiel being the best story. He could always hit. There were stories of his batting practice displays even when he was a pitcher. Just because he sucked as a pitcher and now plays outfield doesn't win me over. I maybe over stateing it but you get my point.
