No idea. Is there a reason you ask?

Didn't he meet all of the members of Mad Season whilst in rehab with them? I'm not sure if that helps either way though.

I have no idea. I always assumed mike and layne new each other for a long time.

I was just listening to that album and it just hit me how much of a personal low this was for layne and how honest he was about himself. It made me wonder where mike was in his relationship with the drug.

He knew Layne but he met the bassist in rehab. The guy subsequently od'd, unless I am mistaken and this wouldn't be the first time. I'm sorry if this is incorrect.

Are you sure Mike was on heroin? I've never read that before. I know he was getting fucked up but I'm not sure he was on smack.

I always thought it was mainly alcohol.

the way i remember it is that Mike and Mark Lanegan (and maybe the drummer as well?) just came out of rehab and wanted to help their friend Layne overcome his issues as well, so they suggested they should form a band to help each other out through music. not counting Lanegan as a full member 2/4 OD'd as of 2002 :(

this is how it really went:

Mike met Baker (mad season bassplayer) at rehab both for their alcohol addictions although Mike was also struggling with cocaine, never heroine. (there is a interview somewhere that mike talks about this). He and baker started to jam, soon they had some blues oriented riffs they wanted to work with. Baker wasn`t known to any music scene so Mike needed to find a drummer and vocalist, I guess that both the Screaming Trees and Alice in Chains weren`t doing anything and both liked the demos enough to start jamming with the two who met in rehab. After some gigs filled with blues improvs and some own songs they decided to enter the studio. That`s the story kids, the story of a short-lived but GREAT band formed by mike as he was also the main song contributor. It was enough to feel way more confidend as a songwriter in PJ where on No Code we can hear his first real songcontributions (red mosquito, present tense) it was also enough to keep him off drugs for atleast 4-5 years (he had some small problems with substances during the binaural recordings).
