This story is directed towards anyone who has either heard the bootleg of PJ's show in Philly on 4/28/03 at the Spectrum. You might remember Ed talking about youth and strength and getting choked up and talking about someone he met named Peter. Ed dedicates Betterman and the beautiful improv tag to Peter. I read in the Concert Chronology that Peter is a boy with cerebral palsy who had become friends with the band.
Well today I'm grabbing a quick lunch, and as I begin my lunch I hear someone behind me ask me "Is that a Pearl Jam shirt?" I turn around to see a shorter guy around my age who works at the restaurant where I was eating. I told him it was a shirt, from their show in 2005. He told me he was at that show, and knows the band. He then asked me "Ever hear the show from April 28 at the Spectrum?" I told him yes and that I actually had tickets to the show but was unable to attend. In my mind I'm thinking "I know where this is going... this is Peter." I look at his name tag real quick and so it is. Before he could say anything I said "That's the one where Ed dedicated Betterman to Peter, wasn't it?" He smiles and says "Yup, and I'm Peter." Pretty cool.
He goes on to tell me about how he was getting ready for surgery and that he first met the band in 1998. Peter says the band is really cool, and that on that night of the Spectrum show Eddie asked Peter what songs he wanted to hear. He said "Betterman and some covers". We talked a bit about the shows that we had been to (any show in the Philly area since then). He always gets to go backstage and hang out with them before the shows.
I just thought this was an interesting encounter with a PJ fan and thought I'd share.

That's awesome. I was at that show and remember Betterman and the tag like I heard it yesterday. I didn't know who Peter was at the time, but I knew whoever Ed was talking about was not your average PJ fan. Cool story, bro.
