Badradio16: Unsteady on My Mind (duet with his cousin) McParadigm: Scab in the Line (with the Failed Catholics)
Unsteady (On My Mind ) On my mind...all the time On my mind... It feels so real...it feels so right So right
I never have been one to worry But the future's never been this blurry I see the way you look at me And in your eyes is where I long to be But things are moving much too quickly And I've realized that love's not what I need Not what I need...
Baby, oh baby, oh baby I'm sick of those maybes I need to know (need to know) Because I can't ignore the signs around me It surrounds my brain And I can't explain... What I'm saying, where I'm going, sometimes never knowing at all Now it's hard to stand...I seem to slip, but I know that I've got to loosen my grip
On my mind...all the time It feels so real...it feels so right So right
I'm losing sleep and I feel so empty I wait in silence for the pain to hit me This situation is so unsteady The train's approaching but I'm not ready I'm not ready to lose you... The thought of losing you is driving me crazy So crazy...crazy
So crazy...crazy
On my mind...all the time (So crazy) On my mind... (So crazy) It feels so real...it feels so right So right
(On my mind...all the time)
Scab In The Line
There's a scab in the line.
People used to sing these songs just for fun. Now you've gotta have the money, if you wanna sing along. Look to hell above, and heaven down below. Let them tell you what you already know: that...
There's a scab in the line.
John missed the notes, but he kept an even time. All that's essential is invisible to the eye. Perched on his instrument, scanning for a kill, he knew that silence was the finest of his skills.
Shh.
We play our songs like a heated arms race, bury the bodies with an even poker face. We move the feeling. We build the bugs. Spend more on music than on perscription drugs, but...
There's a scab in the line.

And of course we're missing Buffalohed's song, getting us off to a rip roarin' start.
Buff has until 11am to get his song in before he forfeits. I'll wait until then to put a poll up

Nice way to kick off the tournament Badradio16--who are you in that song?
A few (hopefully) constructive comments.
I really like the guitar part that introduces the song. The acoustic guitar part reminded me of Angel, which threw me off for a little bit (but that's me, not a problem with the song)
I think you're cutting your vocals off a bit, especially during the chorus. You end each line ratching down the intensity in your voice, rather than driving it up--it makes the end of each lyric somewhat anti-climactic. you start those lyrics strongly so it sounds like you could really build to something special if you continuted to push yourself there.
Have you thought about alternating the lyrics in the second verse?
When will you be home? Will I see your face again? When will you be home? Will I see your face again?
or even changing the lyrics slightly? Subtle changes help make lyrical repetition much stronger. You get the emphasis you wanted by repeating the lyric, but you still manage to suprise the listener. Something like
When will you be home? Will I see your face again? will you be coming home? When will I see your face again?
Finally, you start with an evocative set of lyrics, and it seems like the song is going to be about the person (or persons) you are looking in on, but then it loses a little bit of focus. By the end i'm not quite sure who exactly you are singing about (the Brother reference in particular threw me off a bit)
Overall this song (and I suspect I'll be saying this a lot this tournament) made me wish I could sing/play/write. I think I'm gonna be jealous of a lot of you
Nice job Badradio

Good first entry. The acoustic guitar sounds really good. Your sound is probably at its best when you stop thinking about singing, it's off key and a little unstable in very few parts. I am probably the wrong person to say this, but I think the mixing could have been done a little different. Your voice is pretty quiet while the drums are rather loud, your solo near the end falls short of volume as well. I can see that you put some feeling into the lyrics but the music was, at least to me, the stronger side of the song.
Wow that sounds like a lot of criticism but I still liked your song. I guess I'm just bad at reviewing

bad radio pretty good song, i enjoyed it. i liked the voice a lot, reminded me of michael stipe. though one thing i noticed was that the chords kept reminding me of other songs. the beginning made me think of "falling down" by pj and i can agree with the "angel" call too. in the chorus, the voices in my head started singing the end of stairway to heaven. i think those chords are the same. i'm really not a big fan of the drums (which you'll see is not my strong point: aka drummachine) any way i think the strong points is the melody, didn't remind me of anything, very original. i'm not going to comment on the mixing, cause i'm assuming you're doing what you can, and i'm no whiz either

I don't know whether or not I should to do this so i'll put a spoiler in front of it and you can decide for yourself...but here is what the song means to me:
The whole song is written from the perspective of a young boy whose older brother has gone away to war. The first verse is his observation of life without him and then the rest of the song is basically a prayer for his return. The big thing for me was to capture the feeling of helplessness and complete lack of control that families must feel when a loved one goes away to war. The cut off or "weak" vocals were a stylistic choice because I want it to seem as if the brother is building to a climax that cannot be reached because, no matter how hard he tries, he is ultimately powerless to bring his brother home.

Hmmm--then that definitely ties the rest of the song together, although I can't help but feel that if you didn't know that going in you would not necessarily figure it out from the song itself--a subtle hint or two might bring that into sharper focus

not a bad song at all, though I didnt feel there was anything in it that would have me coming back for more. i did feel the drums felt a bit out of place in the mix though that might also be because all the bass notes were kept so short

It's always hard for me to gage whether I am being too vague with the subject matter of the song. Since I know what the song means to me, it seems obvious to me what it is all about. This is great feedback and I appreciate you all listening.
Oh, and as I was thinking of other ways to possibly interpret the song; having just read Into the Wild, I had a thought that it would definitely fit well as an emotional response from Carine McCandless on her brother's disappearance.

i really like the acoustic guitar at the beginning - it really sounds warm and it's beautifully played. also, the vocals in the soft sections are a lot more pleasing to my ears than the "screaming" ones. all in all i found your song very nice although the 3 chords riff made me immediately think about Stairway To Heaven

Talk a bit about equipment you used, if you would. I'm curious about the recording.
That descending progression is probably overused, but it's so goddamn fantastic. I've leaned on it from time to time, as well. Everyone from Leadbelly to The Sex Pistols to Pearl Jam has used it, not to mention a trillion pop songs that disguise it a little bit more, so why the hell not?

Great job man.... My only problem was in the softer parts of the vocals. This is just personal preference, but I would've liked to have heard a bit more edge on the vocals...maybe not quite so pretty. Other than that...loved it.
