It was probably a split-second reaction, not something that was thought out for a long time. When you're driving and something runs in front of you out of nowhere, it's pretty much instinct to swerve. My brother used to have a fucking bitchin' Z24 when he was a teenager that he totaled because he swerved to miss a cat that ran out in front of him. Shit happens.
Hope you're okay and the insurance company doesn't rape you too bad.
