Sevilla left back Antonio Puerta has died in hospital after suffering two heart attacks during his side's Primera Division match against Getafe on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old collapsed midway through the first half, and though he managed to walk off the pitch and down the tunnel, he then collapsed again and was rushed to hospital.

Doctors at the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville, where Puerta remained in a critical condition, admitted their worries were growing due to the length of his cardiac arrest and the damaged it caused his internal organs.

He was pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before his club are scheduled to take on AEK Athens in a Champions League qualifier.

This is so fucking sad. I was watching the game on Saturday, and it seemed like he 'just' had swallowed his tounge. But to think that this young guy had two heart attacks withing minutes is fucked up. This just ruined my day.

RIP.

As far as I know, his conditon has been critical ever since he arrived at the hospital. But I really hoped he would pull through. He was about to become a father in about two months too.

This is so sad.

French newspaper Le Monde (aka the doping newspaper) blames it on doctor Fuentes. You know the name.

What do you mean? Gerald Asamoah for example has some problems with his heart. Whenever he participates in sports, a defibrillator is on standby near the pitch.

Spain want Puerta's name on their shirts

MADRID (AFP) — Spain are hoping to have the name of defender Antonio Puerta, who died tragically two weeks ago, written on their shirts in time for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifying match in Iceland.

Puerta, 22, collapsed during Sevilla's 4-1 win over Getafe on August 25 and died three days later from multiple organ failure stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest.

The Spanish football federation are waiting for the green light from European football's governing body UEFA to go ahead with the request.

Spain are third in Group F behind Sweden and Northern Ireland and have little margin for error in Reykjavik if they want to get into the top two places and qualify for next year's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Spain, who only managed to beat Iceland 1-0 last March, play a further qualify at home to Latvia on September 12.

i'm all for respecting the dead, but this seems to be pushing it a bit too far.

They should all get those t-shirts that you can buy at the beach with an airbrushed picture of the guy and wear those for the match. Those are class-ay.
