-corned beef
-white bread (don't have any rye and wheat tastes kind of weird for a reuban)
swiss cheese
-sauerkraut
-1000 island dressing
-pickles
-plain lays chips

When I lived in the dorms, the newer, fancier cafeteria made a pretty damn good reuben. I miss eating there sometimes.

It's not supposed to have pickles, and the rye is kinda important. Reubens might be my favorite sandwiches. I've made them a few times, they're not too difficult to do. Just throw everything on and grill till the cheese melts.

It is a toasted sandwich with rye bread, corned beef, swiss cheese and dijon mustard (although apparently it should be 1000 island dressing)

:shake:

No, it is NOT acceptable. The thousand island dressing is crucial. If there is no thousand island, it is not a reuben. A reuben consists of rye bread (preferably marble), corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing. Add or subtract, and it's not a reuben anymore.

I just can't see 1000 island going into this sandwich. It doesn't fit.

Well, FWIW, wikipedia thinks Russian Mustard is OK, but I can't picture a reuben without thousand island. That and the saurkraut is what makes it so great.

 I have the attention span of a goldfish, but in my defence I couldn't figure out why it is called a reuban, prob some sort of Americanism I am guessing.
