But I can't find any thread for 1998 shows and I'd really like to know what you wise RM'ers would consider shit-hot 1998 shows in both performance and sound quality.

Oh baby. 1998 - one of the all time greatest PJ tours but seriously underappreciated lately because of the lack of soundboards.
There is an FM Radio Broadcast recording available for 3/5/98 in Australia (Jack Irons on drums)
7/22/98 Seattle is a killer recording with perfect SBD quality and a high energy performance.
9/16/98 Boston is a very well known show which is also a SBD but very mono sounding. People loved this one when it first came out back in the day. The Throw Your Arms Around Me will give you chills.
I think there is also a steller audience recording from St Louis that tour, although I have never personally heard it.
From personal knowledge I know the audience boot from Philly night 2 (8/29/98) is high quality and it was also a fantastic show. Features the first ever performance of Push Me Pull Me which translates surprisingly well live.
Really, every show from 1998 is good. I love Knoxville, Denver, and Pittsburgh from that year too.
And the final run of the tour is pretty much a must have. Starting with the legendary 9/11/98 MSG show, the band moved through Hartford, two nights in Boston, two nights in DC and two nights in West Palm Beach Fl. I would try to acquire all of them if I were you. The West Palm boots sound pretty darn good too from what I remember.

I have a definite bias from being there, but Denver 6.23.98 is a smokin' show. Great set with the band in a very good mood. In the second encore Ed played an absolutely beautiful, solo version of "I am a Patriot" thanks to some guys down the row from me who had brought a huge "Patriot Please" sign.

The cutting of the mullet show is pretty good. Detroit I believe it is. Also the show with the long version of All Those Yesterdays. Maybe it was the Detroit show. I can't remember right now. Come to think of I can't remember if it was All Those Yesterdays.
VA Beach is also good, imo.

But now...I get it. It was just my fault for forgetting how awesome he was in 1998. Any other band would sound crippled by a fill-in drummer on the eve of a major tour; Pearl Jam sound REBORN.
WHY, WHY, WHY doesn't he play like this anymore? Listen to Corduroy from St Louis; is this the BEST version of this song EVER? It is to me and Matt makes it so. He doesn't play this song well at ALL anymore, what happened? It's just a blur these days, but this version just SLAYS. Slower doesn't mean wimpier, something PJ forgot somewhere after this tour.
I want THIS Matt back on drums, now.
1998 has great setlists too...none of this bring-back-the-shitty-older-songs-fan-fellating. Just playing whatever the fuck they want and the fans lapping it up, nobody sitting marking their list of "most rare song you've heard live".
Short and sweet shows, none of this three-encore stuff: just go out there, make your point, give 'em something extra to chew on and PISS OFF HOME.

I totally agree. Is what I love about the Euro 2000 shows as well. And partially about the Canada 05 shows as well.

Yeah, I remember that as a great show as well. Ed crying during GTF. Just listening to that show gives you energy.
And I remember the shows on Maui from that year to be fun as well. I really need to dig out all the tapes I traded over the years and convert them to mp3, so I can listen to them more easily when I want to.

It's not that I'm against bringing rare stuff back into rotation, I just don't want it to feel as if the band are doing it just to placate their obsessive fans. Bring it back cuz you mean it, y'know.
