BadRadio, thank-you so much for transcribing all of these lyrics. It's really wonderful having them.
Do you think that they have a different feel from Pearl Jam lyrics? They really do all seem like they're coming from the character of Chris and not one of the characters in Ed's mind.

In Entertainment Weekly Ed said they were basically created to fit very specific points in the movie and so the perspective is very much from the film. Ed and Sean watched the film together and Sean asked Ed to put some things together and basically Ed gave him a few things and Sean put them in right away and asked Ed to do more. Others have mentioned how the lyrics even summarize passages in the book. I think Ed is Ed though and you can see similarities lyrically to some Pearl Jam stuff. I am specifically thinking of Riot Act for some reason.

This tune is one of my favorites on the record. Unlike you I love the instrumental part. I like the verse, and I love how his voice sounds, but I wouldn't have minded if this were entirely an instrumental tune.

I see this as Chris's final farewell as he starves to death.
I won't be the last I won't be the first ...To die alone in the wilderness.
Find a way to where the sky meets the earth A reference to him dying and passing into some sort of afterlife.
It's all right and all wrong This is my favorite line. It holds such truth. It is "all right" in that losing his life to nature is a fitting death for McCandless...but "all wrong" in that he was so close to making it out, and he still has so much to offer and live for.
For me it begins at the end of the road We come and go...
His newest adventure begins at the end of the road...he steps into the great unknown.
I see the long instrumental in a symbolic way. Chris is gone, and therefore Ed's voice (which acts as Chris's inner-narrator) is gone as well. The music continues on though, just as McCandless's legacy will live on after he is gone.
I think this one is deeply symbolic and heartbreaking...but that's just my take. Great song.

That's such an eloquent description, BadRadio. This is my favorite song after RISE. After reading your comments, I love it even more. I love the shimmering guitar sounds. Is this all guitars? There's a high plucked string instrument that plays occasionally after the verse ends. Is that the mandolin again?

I always saw that line as him being hapyp and content with what he ended up doing with his life and how it is now ending....but also knowing how much it hurt his family and the people around him. How wrong and selfish it may have been...a bit of regret in that regard.

I listened to it again, and I love this song. It might be my favorite now. BadRadio, you really made me appreciate the vocals. Initially, it just annoyed me that they were there at all. I love them now, and you are right, the melody for the "it's all wrong and it's all right" line is absolutely poignant.
