Okay, so I saw this movie this weekend and came away quite impressed. It provides a pretty sobering glimpse into the inner sanctum of the Royals during the week after Princess Diana's death. I'm not usually a fan of the "docudrama" format, but I thought they did a pretty good job with the story. It was pretty compelling and reaffirmed what I've thought for a long time -- that England's monarchy is nothing more than a symbolic vestage of the past and that the country should become a Republic. Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II was dead-on as well. I definitely recommend the movie.
I liked this movie as well. Helen Mirren really gives a subdued yet great performance, and gives great insight into a type of establishment that I really have no use for, but have flesh and blood people in them. There was a great sense of humor running through the film, but it never overpowers it either. Stephen Frears keeps the pace going, breathing life into what could have become a fairly boring affair.
I honestly forgot that I enjoyed it as much as I did because I saw Children of Men immediately afterwards. That movie could have made me forget if I had lost a limb an hour before.

yeah exactly why do they keep the monarchy going?
Besides the "tradition" shite, many people think the monarchy boosts tourism and makes more money than the taxpayer puts into it. Also (and this is VERY debateable) a tyrannical future government could be damaged by a King or Queen speaking out against it, particularly if such a monarch had a high standing with his/her subjects.

And Queen Victoria became Empress of India. She never even fucking went there, you know? She was one of our more frumpy queens… they're all frumpy, aren't they? Because it's a bad idea when cousins marry! Bottom of the gene pool, you know. You're just scraping the barrel there, “We've haven't got enough for any more of you royals there, sorry.†First rule of genetics: spread the genes apart! But the royals are just obsessed with, "Are you a royal family? Are you a royal member? Well, then you can marry me ‘cause you're same gene pool, and our IQs will go down the toilet.†Fantastic! That's why there's no crazy royals, they're all kind of, "Hello! Hello, what do you do? You're a plumber! What on Earth is that?"
