The only thing that's similar about the two is that they are both in minor keys. Most rock songs are in Major keys. Joy Division's song is just a linear progression of notes that hit the sharp 7th in the minor scale. SAD uses a d minor turn as the core of it's riff. The idea comes from Eddie's classical guitar training in Spain.
TALK ABOUT THE PASSION is in a Major key, so the song isn't similar to SAD at all really. The end of the intro uses a couple of broken minor key chords. The only similarity is the minor key sound.

If we're talking Joy Division and Pearl Jam...i was once playing the intro to Thumbing My Way on the guitar, and my friend (who hadn't heard the song) said that it was a really nice arrangement of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
I'll admit that my playing was bad...BUT...although the rhythm is slightly different (particularly at the end of the phrase) - i think the bass notes are pretty much identical.

to be more exact, similar sounding is what i meant. wouldn't you agree? the intro at least.
I don't think that the songs sound similar, but the opening riffs are in the same register, one is in D Major and one is in d minor, and they use the same time signature. So I agree with you on the "similar" aspect of the opening riffs.
I hear no similarity, even peripherally, with the Joy Division song.

Eddie's been fooling us all, the dirty copy-cat!
I also hear the similarity between the basic melody to LOVE WILL TEAR US APART and THUMBING MY WAY. The arrangements are not similar at all though. I tend to believe that this is coincidental because the similarity between the intro to PUZZLES AND GAMES and the the melody to THUMBING MY WAY is much stronger. One was reworked into the other, perhaps unconsciously. And the intro to PUZZLES AND GAMES doesn't sound like LOVE WILL TEAR US APART.

I know some of Joy Division's work and I can honestly say I don't hear any of it in Pearl Jam's music. But I don't exactly listen for such, so I'm basically no help to this thread.

What a good idea. You must be a genius.
I've been in PJ chat actively a month maybe, and since the day I first saw your posts you've been doing this. I guess is amazing it's stood out at all. Perhaps they don't come into PJ chat unless it's a topic that challenges Vedder and so they see this for the first time...
