Thought I'd throw this open... I just finished writing a song that i started in 2002 and I'm finally happy with it. Wondering if anyone else has spent this much time on a song or what your thoughts are on when a song is done...

Nothing in itself is every finished because no matter how wonderful it is and how much a feeling of finality you get, there is always room for improvement.

Never is my answer to your question.

You're never done but because you must be done, things happen.

Sometimes you reach a point where you tell yourself you achieved as much as you could with a particular set of ideas and go to the next.
Sometimes you hate it so much you're just fucking done.
Sometimes it scares you. It came complete and you sit on it forever only to realize you can't do anything to it and never could. It was already done. Years go by. You let it go.
Sometimes it's finished before you start writing but you aren't afraid.
Sometimes its utter crap and it isn't WORTH wasting another second on it and uh

yeah that last happens a lot.

there's such a thing as 'too done.'

George Martin, remarking on Phil Spector's treatment of the Beatles 'Get Back' recording sessions said something to the effect of "produced by Phil Spector, or as I think of it- overproduced by Phil Spector"

Yes. Same happened with Phil Spector's production on The Ramones' "End of the Century".

There's a quote that i've always loved..i thiiiink Paul Gardener is credited with it, and it's applicable to all art forms really. To (badly) paraphrase: 'A piece of art is never finished. It simply stops in interesting places'.
