Ben is the name of the big rat in the movie "Willard", of which a sequel was made named "Ben", for which Michael Jackson did the song "Ben". The line in Rats is a line from that song. Eddie was a Jackson 5 fan. The movie was a flop but the song was a number one hit, but I'd never heard it until I saw the movie remake of Willard.

That was a remake. The original movies were made in the 70s.

Jackson's been busted w/ kids so many times, it's tough to keep the timeline straight!

It was the first PJ boot I ever had. I taped it off my friend's cd of a boot called "Surfer Eddie's Sunshine State" ( ). It's a really good show though, with rare early performances of Footsteps and Crazy Mary w/ Victoria Williams. I actually just listened to it a few days ago.

i believe it's "Ben, the two of us need love no more"... making it the greatest PJ love song of all time. And I wanna think Eddie a fan of the original movie 'Williard', more so than the Jackson 5.

"...need look no more" would mean he found 'it', but what is 'it' that he found? did you see the movie? what did they find?

Are you right and everyone else got it wrong?

--PunkDavid (no I haven't seen the movie, but I don't think it matters)

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you, my friend will see
You've got a friend in me
(You've got a friend in me)

Ben, you're always running here and there
(Here and there)
You feel you're not wanted anywhere (anywhere)
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
There's something you should know
You've got a place to go
(You've got a place to go)

I used to say I and me
Now it's us, now it's we
(I used to say I and me)
(Now it's us, now it's we)

Ben, most people would turn you away
(Turn you away)
I don't listen to a word they say
(A word they say)
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben
(A friend)
Like Ben
(Like Ben)
Like Ben

if those are the lyrics, which i will take your word on, then you are right, and i won't argue. i thought, perhaps, it had to do with Ben's and Willard's relationship. the original Willard movie came out when i was 7 or so, was fascinated by it, sort of, but never saw the sequel. back then, sequels really sucked. thanks for enlightening me, though. wisdom can adhere, sometimes... but not gonna accept others' interpretations without some convincing, which you did. good day/night.

When I first started listening to PJ I used to kind of make up my own lyrics of what I thought Ed signing!

For the line in question, I always thought

woah deep lyrics ed!!!

heh, he was a fan of the Jackson 5 when he was a kid...and I think it was at the Atlanta show mentioned here when he said "Michael Jackson is innocent".

Willard isn't in "Ben", I believe it's about a young boy that makes friends with the rat, so the song probably pertains to the boy and the rat.

lmao
I think we've all done that, but that's really funny.

I think it would have been cool if "Rats" had been in the soundtrack for the Willard remake.
