who buys products based on the commercials they show on TV?
I can't think of ONE commercial that's made me think to myself- woah, that's some cool car insurance right there, what a great idea! I'm running out and picking some up right after the commercial!
name me one product you bought strictly based on the TV ad you saw for it.

welcome to advertising 101 mary.
the point of most tv adverts is not to get you running to the phone or supermarket. it's purpose is to foster brand recognition and familiarity so that when you are in the market for new insurance, or are at the grocery store and have two products in hand, you will subconsciously recall the commercial and the warm fuzzy feeling it gave you and choose their product.
i'm not sure, but i think my ipod is the last one i got partially because of commercials and partially because of friends recommending it. other than that, i can't think of anything. tivo fast forwarding ftw.

ive never bought anything because of a commercial, but I have NOT bought things based on commercials.
any product that ads on the radio using an annoying song and changes the lyrics for their product (the NY Lottery has been doing this for 10 years now) is on my list.
its uncreative, its fucking annoying, and fuck you I aint buying your shit.

While MF makes good points- I think I lean more in this direction myself- like, hmmm, how annoying was that teminex commercial that made it appear as if there were roaches walking across the screen in the middle of a fake ad within the ad deal so I freak out and turn the channel every time I saw it?

There was a great carpet cleaning shampoo product I saw on tv a year ago. The commercial clearly explained and demonstrated how their formula differentiated from the leading brand. It was no nonsense, clear, and concise. Nothing fancy or flashy. If I needed to clean my carpets I definitely would've bought that product...although I forget the name of it.

I'm going back to work now. I expect this thread to be at 7 pages when I come back. And it better be entertaining too.
