I use VLC a lot, but I think it's mostly a geek media player.

it comes with a ton of function of which there are some i don't think anyone uses, but it always works for playing files that won't play anywhere else. i don't really use it was my main player though.

I haven't investigated media too much, but I'm using amaroK for audio and I think xine for video.

Yeah, if I'm just playing or opening one file, VLC is my default for most media. If I want to play my music collection in a playlist, I use iTunes for Windows or Rhythmbox on linux.

Have you tried amaroK on linux? I started with rhythmbox but haven't used it since finding amaroK. One of the rare KDE apps that is done correctly...

I checked it out after you mentioned it. One thing I do with my linux box is use it at a home network server, which also includes serving my music collection. Rythmbox can do DAAP for sharing with the latest versions of iTunes. Does amaroK have the same capability? I was looking over their website, and it wasnt totally clear. It says it does, but I found a few forum posts that suggest it might not work with newer iTunes versions. Maybe I'll just have to try it :)

No clue, I've never used DAAP.
