I went with 4 other people last night and we were the only ones in the theatre. I have to admit that it was one of the few times I've felt that I got my money's worth from a movie. The ending sucked, I won't spoil it but I was let down. This take on the vampire legend was exceptionally entertaining. I really liked the pack mentality and the way in which they hunt.
The gore was spectacular!!! Hartnet with an axe was tremendously entertaining. There was one particular aerial shot just after the vampires started hunting that would make a fantastic poster. You see bodies strewn throughout the small town and since it is covered in snow, there are blood pool outlines that really pop when seen from above. All of the effects and makeup were top knotch. In fact, anything that had to do with the vampires themselves was great. I loved every aspect from character selection to dialogue to make-up.
Gore hounds will not be disappointed, the story was somewhat weak but the visuals more than made up for it. Some of the casting choices could have been better. I think Hartnet's love interest was a terrible actor. All in all if you enjoy Graphic Violence, there is no way you could be disappointed by this film.

I gotta disagree, I love me some gore and was horribly let down by this movie.
More than anything, I don't think they lived up to the fantastic premise at all. Most vampire movies are the same, a one night seige. Survive until daylight and you'll vanquish the demons. This time you have to survive for a whole month, in a town that's frozen and cut off from the world, but it still felt like a one night seige movie to me. Where was the sense of survival in the group? I never felt like they were hungry, falling apart, desperate for supplies, etc. And then every couple of days, despite the fact that the vampires haven't found them, they decide to move. Why the fuck would you do that? And then there's the vampires. While I dug the fact that they were basically blood thirsty beasts, I couldn't get into the idea at all that they spoke in those ridiculous subtitles, and even then what they were saying was horrible. And yes, Hartnett was a terrible choice to carry this movie, his acting was wooden and he couldn't even grow a convincing beard. I'm glad you liked it and felt like you got your money's worth but I felt totally ripped off by this one.

Well, I have to liken this to the way I feel about Rock Music. Everything has been done. I have not seen a movie produced in the last 5-6yrs or so that has actually left me with an impression other than special effects. I have 0 expectations of ever being scared by a movie again. I have 0 expectations of Hollywood ever inventing anything new or interesting in the horror genre. So let's call a spade a spade. This is a vampire movie. They drink blood and are only killed by sunlight, garlic or beheading. Where else can you take that legend?
Maybe kids can identify with Hartnet, I sure can't. I can't say anything good about the casting of the non-vampires. To make this an effective movie (and don't misinterpret this as me saying they did) there has to be a human interest angle. This usually (and is an easy cop-out) results in a love story sub-plot, otherwise it is just a snuff fillm (which I am ok with). I don't think they succeeded in making an effective human interest story but I didn't go in there looking for one. I went for one purpose... blood on a big fucking screen.
To me, this movie was a comedy. I laughed out loud sever times in the theatre. When Hartnet beheads his partner, that was a fucking fantastic special effects shot. Also, right before that with the garbage compactor was tremendous as well. Nicotero and Savini would be very proud to see how far the craft has evolved. I was literally slamming the back of the seat in front of me and hooting and hollaring. I went to see blood and it delivered on a relatively frequent basis. Just when I was falling asleep from boredom, something would get mutilated. That's all I can ask for anymore. I have no expectations that I will ever get any more than that. In fact, for people like me, I think these movies are going to progressively get even worse. I think someone will eventually pipe up about the hideous violence and they will have to start taming down movies again. Once the hideous gore is gone, there is really nothing left for these types of movies. Can you imagine Hostel without the gore? That's a 30 minute movie!
So put this in perspective. It's a shitty movie. The gore is tremendous. The story is awful. The gore is tremendous. The acting is awful. The gore is tremendous.
If you disagree, then we have totally differing opinions on what makes a great evisceration/disembowelment/decapitation/arterial spray/mutilation scene.

Well, let's get full disclosure going on first of all. I thought it was going to suck going into it. My friend from Cali was in town for the week and our little group are all pretty big genre buffs and since it was the only thing out at the moment, they wanted to see it. I was in favor of staying home and watching the Halloween work print, which neither of them had seen yet (one of them loved the theatrical, the other hated it). So I didn't even want to go, but I agreed because I had a free movie ticket to use on it, which ended up being denied and I had to put down $8 on this thing. So I went in with an attitude of "this better be fucking good". And I'll give you that some of the gore moments were good, but nothing blew me away. Maybe it was because I wanted it more frequently or was just already pissed off about the whole experience but it didn't make up for the rest of the movie, which went on waaay too long.
And I'll agree, pretty much everything has been done but as far as I'm aware that particular concept hasn't, and it's a damn good one. But they blew it. Maybe I'll see it on dvd and fast forward to the good parts and check those out because I think you know your good mutilations when you see them but by the time they got to most of those parts I was ready to fall asleep or bail on the movie due to boredom. I was hoping for something along the lines of a 28 Weeks Later and it fell very short. But I'm glad you enjoyed it and felt you got your money's worth, I wish I could say the same.

If it's anything like the "groundbreaking graphic novel" the ads say it is, it will be a neat concept with terrible execution. This is a renter for me.

Overall this movie was good... although some of the scenes were rather dark & the camera movement/angles too quick in some parts... I agree that the end was not what I had expected, and my rating of the movie escalated from 6 to 8... then plummeted to 1-2 mark at the end. But the plot was pretty strong...

There are easily a thousand vampire movies, and out of that maybe 5 good ones. Your odds with vampires is never really good.

Do you consider From Dusk Till Dawn to be really good? I fuckin' love that movie.
Oh yeah, I love some Dusk Til Dawn. It's almost not a vampire movie though, the vampires come from so out of left fucking field. I saw that one theatrically, knew it was supposed to be a vampire movie, but by the time they got to the Titty Twister and the vampires were showing up I had completely forgotten about that and thought I was watching a crime/getaway movie.

Same here. I remember the first time seeing it, I was almost disappointed that the movie took that turn because I was really digging what was happening so far, even though I knew it was coming. Fun, fun movie, though.

We can't even agree on this. I can't really even think of one that I don't have any complaints about. BS's Dracula being the best but I still hate every scene with Keanu. He ruins what could have been one of the best movies ever. Nosferatu is probably the most enjoyable. Please give me some guidance if you think I may have overlooked something...

Nah, I don't think you're overlooking much. Like I said, there are millions of them and very few good ones. Bram Stoker's is good, though I have the same Keanu complaints as you, Nosferatu is solid, I like Near Dark a lot, the aforementioned From Dusk Til Dawn though it's only kinda a vampire movie. Oh, and Fright Night, I still love that one, it was one of my first horror movies.

The weird looking friend from that movie is now doing gay porno.
That's so gay Brewster!
Oh, and I believe that one is being remade, but in name only. I don't even think it's going to be a vampire flick.

I haven't seen Salem's Lot (the original, not that TNT abortion) since I was a kid, and I dont want to see it again. I know it will ruin my child's perception of it: Terrifying.
