I liked this song better when it was called Long Road.
never agreed with this.. I LOVE Long Road, but these songs are entirely different. Ok, so Ed plays guitar on both, fine. The subject matter is different (pending loss vs. existing loss), Parting Ways cuts straight to individuals as opposed to a group of people....
Both great songs, but no need to compare.
the melody is very similar, as are the drums. I always hear long road in parting ways too

Still one of the most gut-wrenchingly powerful songs Pear l Jam have ever created. It never gets old, nor do I ever tire of it. A masterpiece in every sense.
That there word masterpiece pops up in my "First Time: Binaural"

Why is this not a regular live staple is behind me. it could easily replace YLB as the closing song!
too sad. it works on a record (and the few times they've played itl ive they've nailed it) but YLB, whatever its origianl intent, has turned into a communal fan celebration of the end of the show--a chance for mike to go off, a sing along chorus, etc. Parting Ways can't really replace that

I've never really paid much attention to the lyrics to this one. Wow. Never liked this one a whole lot before, but now, I have a whole new apprecation for it.

I had written a poem with metaphors about men of clay etc., listened to this and threw it out. LOL
BTW, has everyone heard the sound check from Barcelona 96? Back in the day I played that thing a lot. Gawd. So beautiful and it disappears for 4 years coming back to us like this. I thought we were so lucky.
you know a file is old when it has a ~ tilde. LOL.

Aless, how do you like the version Ed did with Finn & friends
?
I love it. I love this song. I just fucking love it. I fell in love with it before Binaural. It was like a miracle to me. Such a beautiful melody oh my god. I played it over and over wishing wishing. And then it's on an album. oh my god.
What's my favorite version? I don't have one but I do love the Finn. I also love ATP. I love the album version. I probably don't have a favorite because of the way I was introduced to the song, that boomy sound check and what it meant for me and not knowing anything about it other than what i could hear. And i tell you, we traded that thing all over. a precious cherished sound check that sounds terrible relatively speaking, but who cares? you can hear the music.
