I've been playing with this for a few months and I'm pretty impressed so far.
http://www.mediamaster.com

Also if you get in while they are still doing their beta testing, you will get all kinda of extra benefits when they have a premium release.
Very slick service. Totally try it out if you're interested in having your entire music collection online.

this is an interesting service, but i tend to bring my ipod all over, which I guess kinda fills the need that this does.

that's pretty neat. can this be used as a backup/storage thing, too?

Yeah, I also bring my iPod a lot of places. I actually think the future of music storage is having it all online and hand held and wireless devices will just stream it to any device wherever you are. We're not there yet, but this service is in that direction. Plus I like having it all there online as a backup in case my home collection explodes.

Right now you can only upload your files. You cannot download, but they are adding the download feature and should be available in their next UI release, so it should work as a real backup. One thing they will NOT do is allow anyone to download files. Only you will be able to log in and download your own files. That is partly how they can have this service be legal, not allowing others to download your songs.

are the files held online and are thus retrievable in case of a hard drive failure?

EDIT: I read the FAQ. I could definitely use this service

that's cool. i already use an external to back up my files but this would be a nice addition. and it'd be cool to have it wherever i go.

i suppose i could just sorta "share" my username/password if i wanted, couldn't it?

oh, i thought this service was a like a streaming from your home pc type thing. my music collections is somewhere between 80-100 gigs right now, would i have to upload all of that? that would take weeks :|

I share it with my wife. I'm not sure if they have some sort of measure to see how many people log into your account and from where. They might. If it's just a couple people i'm sure it's fine. If you share it with 50 people, they might get suspicious, who knows.

It’s important to us that you don’t put stolen music on the site. If you bought the CD or downloaded the MP3 from a legal service like eMusic, go ahead and upload it!

My music collection is about 60gb right now and it took a week and a half to upload. But they have a great uploader application that queues as much music as you want and uploads it. I just turned on my computer and let it go all the way until it was done and it worked beautifully for the entire collection.
