it's basically one of those situations where the person will stop when they want to stop

Trying to make an alcoholic stop drinking is nearly impossible though. I've been in a situation like this, and I tried to talk to my friend about it, and he blew me off. He really fucked up one night on his own, and that's what changed his outlook. It's thin ice to tread on as well, because if you or your friend drink a lot she's gonna see you at hypocrites and totally ignore what you have to say. An alcoholic will find any way or reason to validate the behavior.

bugs, this blows. it's true that there is only so much you can do and they mostly have to work on disciplining themselves.

short of dragging her to rehab and standing guard over her the entire time, I'm not sure there's much you can do.

I had a good friend who was what I think of as a functional alcoholic. She'd get a 12 pack of beer every night after work, drink the whole thing, go to sleep, get up the next day, go to work, and do it all over again.

She would also get completely wasted about three times a month- usually weekends, she didn't really think she had a problem...

She got into a car accident, punctured her lung, was arrested (in the hospital, they handcuffed her to her hospital bed while her lung was still collapsed) she lost her license, nearly lost her kids (they were in their teens by this time), and her marriage fell apart.

Even after all that, she didn't stop drinking.

She's better now- although I believe she still drinks, but tells me not as often...
but it was a decision she had to arrive at on her own- and even now I worry that she'll fall into that hole again.
Alcohol isn't easy...

At some point you (and your friend) have to realize that it's not your job to make sure the other person lives their life the way that you think it's best for them. It's great that you want to help, even that you feel obligated to do something, but in all honesty your responsibility is to make sure that you do the right thing for yourself and accept that other people make their own choices, as clouded as their judgement may be as a result of those choices.

It does suck. It's difficult to watch. Hope for the best.
