remember this horrible fad? there were some diamonds in the rough so to speak, but by and large this was punk rock at it's absolute lowest common denominator.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They're a supergroup of sorts in punk circles with members of NOFX, Lagwagon, Swingin Utters and No Use For A Name.

Either--mostly I wasn't sure how far back you were talking about

I feel covers have been a lot more popular since the cake/limp bizkit days. it makes me sad. Write your own god damned music

Though i'm not really a fan, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are just a gimmick and don't really bug me that much. They aren't making millions of dollars off a lead single that somebody else wrote 30 years ago, as is the case with the Ataris. I fucking hate bands that rise to fame on the shoulders of a cover song. Yeah the Ataris were fairly well known band before that song, but that one made them famous to everybody outside of pop punk scene.

It just seemed that there was a time during the late 90's/early 00's when every punk band seemed to have a cover song on some comp or single. It was stupid and they all sounded the same, and in 99.9% of cases were just an embarassment to the original.

I think covers have become more popular because of the bands like Limp Bizkit and the Ataris who attained mainstream popularity on the strength of a cover song. Before it used be some something a band would tack on as a b-side or on a comp or tribute album, but nowadays it's becoming alarmingly commonplace. It's fucking lazy.

I often wonder how any sane person can enjoy that Ataris song. It has to be one of the worst songs ive heard in a very long time and it was all over the radio. And as far as Limp Bizkit go's....well we could have a field day with them but faith and behind blue eyes pretty much speak for themselves as to what happens when already crappy bands hit a all time low.

covers i do enjoy:

NOFX - Vincent (Don McLean - i'm guilty of loving everything this band does so even though this song pretty much fits the formula for the punk covers i'm bitching about, it's ok cause it's NOFX 8) )
Down By Law - 500 Miles (the Proclaimers - lead singer has a gravely yell that makes this song awesome)
Rise Against - Any Way You Want It (Journey - i love everything Rise Against does too  )

there are a couple of others that i can't place right now

there is a whole list of other punk covers i enjoy, but it's punk bands covering old punk and ska songs and that's not what this bitch session is about.

I haven't heard this but i'm betting that it sucks. Mainstream rock bands covering punk classics as a cheap attempt at credibility is even lamer than punk bands covering old mainstream rock staples.

wouldn't you just rather listen to the original? It's the same basic song, but the Ataris version is faster and 'edgier'.

That's why I like it more, truthfully. I like punk covers that tackle songs of a slower pace more than punk covers that are simply re-do's of punk classics (think the Offspring's horrible version of Smash It Up by the Damned). You put the word edgier in quiotes, so I'm taking for granted that you're being sarcastic...but I would say it IS edgier because it has more attiutude to it.

Do you like The Clash's version of I Fought the Law or do you like the Bobby Fuller Four's original better?

Yeah i was being a little sarcastic.

In regards to I Fought the Law, i'm not a big Clash fan either and i really didn't know it was a cover. To be honest though, i like the Dead Kennedys version the best  .

Generally i don't like the punk covers that you've described because it's lazy. They rarely change the structure of the song other than to speed it up and throw some distortion and punk vox in there. It's a formulaic approach and it just smacks of phoning it in. But like i said, there are some decent ones out there it's just the majority that sucks. It's a gimmick that should never have caught on.

The Ramones had one cover song on every album, and even had an album of nothing but covers. :?
