I know there's a film noir thread here, but what are some great detective/mystery/modern noir/crime thrillers or anything similar. I'm thinking along the lines of Chinatown, LA Confidential, Blue Velvet, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and even stuff like Sin City and Memento.
Include books as well if you have anything to recommend.

you've got to check out james ellroy's la quartet book series, of which la confidential is part 3. if you like these kinds of stories you will absolutely love these books.

I've always been interested in the Black Dahlia case. The movie got mixed reviews but the book is good? I might have to check it out.

the book is good, doesn't play as intregal a part in the series itself but it introduces some of the characters that play big parts in the other books. the big nowhere, la confidential, and white jazz have a story arc that connects them all together. i highly recommend reading all four books in order.

You should see Brick if you haven't. It's the noir film set in a high school. Some people thought it was stupid, but I loved it.
that movie was offensively bad

I love those. I love Ellroy anyway. Can't wait for the last chapter of American Underworld trilogy
