My brother and I have been having this debate since we both saw 300: who would win in an even-matched fight, Maximus or Leonidas? It should come as no surprise that I think it's Maximus, and my brother swears Leonidas would demolish him. What do others think?
Mods, can we get a poll on this please? Thanks.

Well, Leonidas would clearly be chomping at the bit to get all oily and naked wrestle, where Maximus would probably win by blindsiding him with a hurled telephone.

I'm afraid it's gotta be Leonidas. Comparing the upbringing and training Maximus had (Spanish nobleman, normal Roman army training) to Leonidas' (Spartan royalty, and the gruelling agoge) only hammers home the point. To survive the agoge you gotta be one bad sonofabitch. Leonidas would break Maximus over his knee.

Leonidas would win, and then the Romans would invade Sparta, and kick thier ass. Which I believe is pretty much what happend. (Juv?)

[boring history mode]Sparta was frigged long before the Romans invaded Greece. Spartan society was held together by a large serf population called Helots who were always trying to break free. However, there were (approximately) 7 Helots to every one Spartan male, hence, their brutal training regime which helped them stay on top. However, Sparta was undone because they literally ran out of men. After a catastrophic defeat at Leuktra they lost control of the helots and their power, and became essentially a backwater.[/boring history mode]

Loenidas the comic and movie version would win cause the guy was super human. The real Leonidas was probably 5'3'' and 130lbs. A Roman solider would mop up the floor with a Spartan in single combat. Spartans were trained to fight together, individually they were no better than any other solider in ancient times.
