The original trilogy will be available in a limited-edition set in Dec.

September 28, 2005 - On December 6, 2005, Fox Home Entertainment will release the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD in a new limited edition three-disc set. The collection, which arrives in stores a little over a month after the release of Star Wars Episode III - The Revenge of the Sith, will feature new artwork, modest bonus features and a handful of Easter Eggs on each disc. The versions included in this set are from the 1997 re-release, although no information is yet available about whether the films will feature the revisions made at that time, or simply contain the same (additional) revisions and changes made for the 2004 release of the trilogy on DVD. The set will be packaged in a cardboard slipcase, display the formatting of the films - either widescreen of full-frame - and retail for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $49.99.

The Star Wars Trilogy (3-Disc) Limited Edition DVD set will feature the following extras:

Star Wars: A New Hope

Feature film presentation

Commentary by George Lucas, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren and Carrie Fisher

Easter Egg: credit roll

Empire Strikes Back

Feature film presentation

Commentary by George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren and Carrie Fisher

Easter Egg: credit roll

Return of the Jedi

Feature film presentation

Commentary by George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren and Carrie Fisher

Easter Egg: credit roll

Check out the artwork below for both the pan-and-scan and widescreen packaging of the Star Wars Trilogy (3-Disc) Limited Edition DVDs:

How many times does Lucas expect us to buy these movies?

I'll buy them once if they release the pre-1997 versions.

This just appears to be a barebones re-release for cheapskates. I don't think it's meant to be a new super wizbang collector's edition.

If one were so inclined, one could find laserdisc rips on DVD of the original remasters (just bluescreen touch ups and Dolby Digital sound) out there in the depths of the interweb.
Lucas has had more than enough of my discretionary income. He ain't gettin no more.

Lucasfilm supposedly publically announced that they will not be releasing the sexology on hi-def formats. :x

That's fine by me. I already have all 6 on dvdr and I plan to buy the LOTR blu-ray boxed set when it comes out.

Don't believe that for a second. He said they wouldn't be on DVD. He said the (original) Special Editions were "final" - they were altered for the DVDs. He said the original theatrical versions of the films would never be released on any format - they were. Star Wars will be released on Blu-Ray and / or HD DVD once there is a winner or once more consumers own players.

That's the only way I'd buy them, if the whole set was there.
