Why? I here it's a great place. I'd like to visit someday, but in all reality its so far down the list, that unless I get some cushy job that affords me at least two months vacation a year, I'll NEVER get there.

I know its a great place and such, but too far from the Equator line to me.

This may all be correct.

Surely I don't need to do the rest of the analysis for you.
No, do it. Because when I had my eurythmia, even as a commoner, I had the privelege of seeing one of the best, if not the BEST specialist in my problems in the northeast. And when my commoner mom had her cancer, she had the same elite access to one of the worlds best cancer institutes that the elites get. The Mayo Clinic isn't full of rich sick people. John Hopkins isn't full of rich sick people. We all have the same damn access to it. All you need to do is invest in your body like you invest in your car. But somehow in this country, people manage to be more fully responsible for their auto's, then their own bodies, then complain that they're left out of the cold. Oh yeah, there's that thing called called medicare and medicaid, which ironically is the same ticket into those elite hospitals.
Sure and MD Anderson, arguably the best cancer hospital in the world isn't full of rich people either, but if you think the access to these facilities is good via Medicaid in particular, you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

i agree with LW. factoring in average life expectancy without some sort of control for the fact that so many Americans are willingly assuming huge health risks doesn't make a lot of sense.

But are more Americans willingly assuming more health risks than other nations or is that just a perception? Do we have any statitistics to back that up?

I'm pretty sure ALL old people get Medicaid. Fucked up, if you ask me.
edit: Rather, all old people have it available. They just need to apply, and follow a few simple guidelines, and they get it. My grandmother gets it, it pays a lot of fucking money, and she already has enough wealth saved personally to pay all her bills for like 50 years anyway. It is quite ludicrous.

Old people get medicare. Poor people get medicaid.

medicaid is a program funded by the federal, state and local governments. its requirements change from state to state, as do its money liabilities. i know that in new york -- the costliest program in the u.s. -- the feds pay 50 percent, state pays 34 percent, and local governments 16 percent, with its aim to provide health care to the poor and and disabled. there are certain cutoff lines in terms of income and assets.
medicare is a federal health insurance program designed for people over 65 and some people with disabilities. recently, though, its prescription drug component was privatized.

It has made it more complicated, but it also allows for more money. I'm not sure how it works, but I know that old people get fuckloads of money, whether they need it or not, to pay for medications.
