Pearl Jam's best meshing period is during the Lollapalooza tour.

And then they continue to grow further apart.

With Yield, they alter their studio approach to minimize their distance; by being democratic, there's not as much internal feuding.

Binaural sessions find the band at their best/closest in a long time; the sessions suffer from recording techniques.

Riot Act they are very far apart and take little time to revise, edit and polish their work, primarily because certain members are doing other things.

S/T The band's as close together as they've been, even more so than Binaural, but due to various biographical and national events, the songs are of a different quality, but this isn't about quality, thus they appear closer together.

as said above previously, this doesn't have to do with the quality of the relationships, just their standing in relation to each other. riot act was recorded live, but I feel like Ed had so much interpersonal stuff going on, way more than the Binaural sessions (probably not the tour), he was probably very distant from the rest of the band; when the band's playing music and ed's typing lyrics over it and performing it in one take, there's not a lot of collaboration OR meditated thought... it's just act act act, don't think, don't 2nd guess, just put it out there and don't return to it. With a band like Pearl Jam, this approach is excellent if they were to edit what they put out on clay mound, as is, they just gave us the mound clay with very little polishing, imo, and in large part because Ed is the only band member who slaves over the post-production stuff, and he wasn't interested or maybe just was focused with other things, and so that part of it was more or less neglected by band members who don't play that role anyways. If I could have a Riot Act or a S/T which seems the EXACT opposite approach, I'd take a S/T. Still, for what it's worth, Riot Act should have the reputation as the album PJ made by going into a studio for only a few weeks and recording entire songs in one day, almost as an exercise or experiment in raw, unfiltered, unedited creation.
