Honors Physics – Relative Velocity – Homework
The Wasp, The Bird, The Plane, The Horse, The Ship, The Ocean, and The Fish

At precisely 02:27 (and 19.85 s) AM on February 27, 1985, The Wasp, while humming “Toxic” by Britney Spears, was buzzing by The Bird at a relative speed of 0.18 m/s at an angle of 13.77o West of South. At the same instant in time, The Bird, while whistling “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” was flying towards The Plane at a relative speed of 2.45 m/s at an angle of 68.79o North of West. At that exact instant, The Plane, which was spelling out the lyrics to “Oops I Did it Again” in the air with smoke, was flying over The Horse below at a relative speed of 257.43 m/s at an angle of 22.65o East of South. At the same instant, The Horse, while neighing “Lucky,” was galloping on the poop deck of The Ship at a speed of 4.20 m/s at an angle of 22.65o East of North relative to The Ship. At the same instant, The Ship, which had a Britney Spears look-a-like contest taking place on its poop deck, was sailing at a speed of 36.92 m/s at an angle of 87.78o North of East relative to The Ocean. At the same instant, The Ocean, which was bubbling to the beat of “I’m a Slave 4 U,” was flowing along at a rate of 50.41 m/s at an angle of 47.13o West of North relative to The Fish. What was the Wasp’s velocity relative to The Fish at precisely 02:27 (and 19.85 s) AM on February 27, 1985?

NOTE: For this problem, imagine you are an observer looking down upon this entire scene (not from the side!). Also, this entire problem technically involves 3 dimensions (North/South, East/West, and up/down), but, for simplicity, just disregard the 3rd dimension (up/down, or the “height” involved).

Please tell me that my physics teacher has something wrong with him.

Haha, we need a picture of that fruitcake to make this post 100% stellar.

Are we accounting for relativity?

Meh, just assume a specific reference point.

What I meant was, are we assuming Newtonian mechanics apply, or do we have to calculate the exact value using relativistic mechanics?

If you're only going to three decimal places, relativistic mechanics won't be significant for these velocities. Perhaps I shouldn't comment, I'm not even required to take modern physics.

Yeah, I suppose with significant figures and whatnot....
